Opening a major boost for healthcare in Siaya County, Governor James Orengo has announced the completion of the Modern Surgical Complex at Siaya County Referral Hospital. This cutting-edge facility is poised to revolutionize medical services, bringing specialized care closer to home and easing overcrowding – but it’s still awaiting crucial restocking from the national government to go fully operational by year’s end.
The project, a cornerstone of Orengo’s Nyalore manifesto, marks a pivotal milestone in transforming Siaya’s healthcare landscape. Groundbreaking began in September 2022 with a Sh68 million investment, and construction has progressed steadily, with updates showing significant advancements by late 2024. The complex features four advanced surgical theatres, a 10-bed Intensive Care Unit (ICU), a Central Sterile Services Department (CSSD) unit, a fully equipped pharmacy, and other essential components designed to handle complex procedures locally.
“We have completed the construction of Siaya County Referral Hospital Modern Surgical Complex and the process of equipping the facility is underway before operationalization later this year,” Governor Orengo stated. “The state-of-the-art facility features four surgical theatres, a 10-bed ICU, a CSSD unit, and pharmacy among other critical components. It will be a major milestone to healthcare provision for our referral hospital as it will enable patients to get specialized healthcare closer home and reduce congestion in the facility. Revolutionizing our healthcare system in line with Nyalore manifesto is well on track.”
This development aligns with broader efforts to modernize Siaya’s health infrastructure. In September 2025, a groundbreaking ceremony for a Sh1.7 billion expansion added a new inpatient block, aiming to increase capacity to 500 beds and integrate seamlessly with the surgical complex. The partnership between Siaya County Government, the Ministry of Defence, and national health authorities – including involvement from the Kenya Defence Forces – underscores a collaborative push for better access to cardiology, oncology, and emergency services.
Residents have long faced challenges traveling to distant facilities for specialized treatment. Once restocked and operational, the complex will decongest lower-level hospitals, create jobs for healthcare workers, and support Universal Health Coverage goals. With over 400,000 Siaya residents enrolled in the Social Health Authority (SHA), the facility could inject vital resources into local care, building on the Sh416 million already disbursed to providers.
As Siaya awaits national government support for final equipping, excitement builds for a healthier future. “Afya Bora, Maisha Bora” – better health, better life – is no longer just a slogan; it’s becoming reality in Siaya County. Stay tuned for updates on this transformative project that’s set to make waves in Kenya’s healthcare scene.
