The war on narcotics in Mombasa has scored a major victory after detectives busted a suspected drug den in Utange, seizing heroin worth more than Sh4 million and arresting two alleged traffickers.
In a swift, intelligence-led operation, officers drawn from the Anti-Narcotics Unit (ANU), the Transnational Organised Crime Unit (TOCU) and Kiembeni Police Station swooped on a fortified residential house in the Barawa area of Kisauni Sub-County, bringing a thriving illicit trade to an abrupt end.
The suspects, identified as Tawaida Ali Said and Shamim Abubakar, were arrested after detectives acted on credible intelligence pointing to the premises as a hub for heroin storage and distribution.
A meticulous search of the house, which was concealed behind a towering perimeter wall, led to the recovery of several neatly packaged sachets of heroin hidden inside two bedrooms. The operation took a dramatic turn when officers extended the search to the compound, where they uncovered an additional package of heroin cunningly buried in a hole, a clear attempt to evade detection.
By the end of the raid, detectives had seized 1,346 grams of heroin with an estimated street value of Sh4,092,000, alongside a digital weighing scale and a drying machine—equipment that points to a well-organised and sustained narcotics operation.
The two suspects are currently being held in police custody as detectives finalize investigations ahead of their arraignment in court.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) reaffirmed its commitment to dismantling drug trafficking networks through sustained intelligence-driven operations and close multi-agency collaboration, warning that traffickers have nowhere to hide.
