A man and his wife have been charged at the Siaya High Court with the murder of nine family members on April 23, 2025 in Upanda village Sigomere, Ugunja sub-County.
Christopher Owino and his wife Roseline Atieno appeared before Justice David Kemei to answer nine counts of premeditated murder.
In their answering plea the couple denied responsibility for the deaths of Ouma Opondo Adalla, his wife Jecinter Anyango, and their seven children: Seline Atieno, Lyon Otieno, Loela Atieno, Loice Achieng, Davis Ochieng, Rayan Odhiambo, and Melvin Ochieng.
Christopher Owino and Roseline Atieno through their lawyer asked for a cash bail of KES 500,000 which the prosecution opposed citing procedural lack of an affidavit signed by the accused.

Justice David Kemei scheduled ruling on bail application to 9 June, 2025.
The brutal murder via arson of the seven children aged between six months and seventeen years sent shockwaves throughout the country.
All nine were buried inside a giant hole at their Upanda village home on 9 May 2025.
Mourners, who included Siaya Deputy Governor Dr. William Oduol Denge called for swift execution of justice on the perpetrators.
Christopher Owino and Roseline Atieno have been remanded at the GK Kombul Prison in Siaya.
