Siaya County roared to life as the 12th Edition of the Kenya Inter-County Sports and Cultural Association (KICOSCA) Games officially kicked off, marking the start of a week-long sporting and cultural spectacle that has drawn participants from across the country.
This year’s edition landed in Siaya after Governor James Orengo’s successful diplomatic push, which saw his administration secure the prestigious chain and torch — the official symbols of authority for hosting and patronage of the national cultural games.
The opening ceremony at the iconic Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Stadium was nothing short of majestic.
Governor Orengo, outgoing patron and Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa, and Council of Governors Chair and West Pokot Governor Simon Kachapin inspected a guard of honour mounted by the Siaya County Inspectorate. The display set the tone for what promises to be one of the grandest KICOSCA editions in recent years.
A vibrant procession followed, with delegations from counties including Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, Nandi, Machakos, Bomet, Busia, Laikipia, Kiambu, West Pokot, Samburu, Kajiado, Murang’a, Baringo, Kisii, Nyandarua, Vihiga, Tana River, Narok, Makueni, and others.
Participants marched into the stadium in a festival of colour, culture, dance, and sporting energy, officially signalling the start of competitions.
The Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Stadium — now a regional sports jewel — will be the nerve centre of this year’s games.
With an impressive 10,000–15,000 seating capacity, revamped facilities, and a modern layout tailored for football, netball, athletics, and ceremonial events, the stadium is set to host the bulk of the high-profile matches and finals.
The real heat of the games begins tomorrow, with dozens of teams scrambling for national bragging rights, championship medals, and coveted trophies across various sports.
Disciplines will be spread out across key venues in the county as thousands of fans troop in to support their teams.
Governor Orengo was flanked by top leaders, including Governor Barasa, Governor Kachapin, County Secretary Joseph Ogutu, several county executives, chief officers, directors, county staff, and thousands of participants and spectators.
The strong turnout by top leadership signaled the growing prestige of the KICOSCA Games as a platform for unity, cultural exchange, talent development, and county pride.
As excitement sweeps across Siaya, residents and visitors alike are gearing up for electrifying competition, unforgettable cultural showcases, and a historic celebration of Kenya’s inter-county spirit.
With the torch now firmly in Orengo’s hands, Siaya is ready to deliver one of the most memorable KICOSCA editions ever witnessed.
