PEOPLE TO WATCH (Siaya 2027) — Engineer Martine “Mijesh” Otieno: Businessman or Political Wildcard?
Spread the love

When the story of influence in Siaya County is written — money, political networks, contract power, and public goodwill — one name consistently rises to the surface: Engineer Martine Otieno Juma, better known across the Lake Region simply as “Mijesh.”
As 2027 approaches, he may very well be the most watched non-politician in Alego-Usonga.

Born and raised in South-East Alego Ward, in Alego-Usonga Constituency, Mijesh rose from modest beginnings to founding Mijesh Enterprises Ltd, a well-known construction and civil works company headquartered in Kisumu.

The company, registered as a public entity offering roadworks, heavy concrete, construction, and civil engineering services, is among the known suppliers and contractors used by governments within the Lake Region bloc. That alone has earned him deep integration into Siaya’s development ecosystem — and political radar.

Across Siaya, many infrastructural transformations are tied — directly or indirectly — to the work and influence of the region’s contractors. Among the most visible achievements celebrated locally is the reconstruction and enhancement of the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Stadium — a once-stalled project that is now a regional sports hub after phased rehabilitation that involved Mijesh Construction and players from the national government.

Though the final stadium inauguration was conducted under national and county oversight, local accounts and development lists often credit Mijesh’s firm as part of the backbone that steered the last stages of the project as well as accompanying access roads and feeder infrastructure.

It is the kind of tangible footprint that voters, business stakeholders, and political leaders remember.

Sometime in September 2025, Siaya witnessed a telling moment. When Eng. Godfrey Muga, Mijesh’s father-in-law, passed on, the funeral in Gem Sirembe drew a crowd that spoke volumes:

Siaya Governor James Orengo

County Assembly Speaker George Okode

County Secretary Joseph Ogutu

Gem MP Elisha Odhiambo

Several MCAs

Business leaders

Senior county officials

Influential local and national opinion shapers

It was more than a condolence gathering. It was a public display of the quiet but undeniable force that is Mijesh — a signal that he commands not just business respect, but political capital and social loyalty.

For many, the mass show of support reflected two things:
(1) he is genuinely well-liked, and
(2) he wields financial and political networks that few in the county can ignore.

Business mogul, Martine “Mijesh” Otieno

Unlike traditional Siaya political players, Mijesh has mastered the art of quiet media strategy. His reach spans:

online sangwenyas and digital operatives,

blogging circles that he is widely believed to have full influence over,

local FM stations and community media,

and an ability to make headlines in mainstream outlets whenever he chooses to.

This blend of grassroots digital power and soft publicity gives him an instant messaging army — one that many active politicians envy. It is shrewd, strategic, and highly effective, especially in a region where digital narratives sway young voters.

His respect and likeability across these platforms are not manufactured. They are inherent — growing from years of generosity, approachability, and quiet philanthropy.

For now, Mijesh is officially a businessman. But whispers have grown louder — and more persistent — that he may vie for the Alego-Usonga MP seat in 2027.

The prospect is taken so seriously that local analysts argue:

“If Mijesh were to enter the race, he wouldn’t just give the incumbent MP a tough time — he could easily upset the status quo.”

Why this confidence?

Money power: He has the resources to run a full-scale, professionally managed campaign.

Development record: Voters can see the projects tied to him or his company.

Cross-class acceptance: From Bodaboda riders to county executives, he is viewed as accessible.

Wide media reach: Digital, grassroots, and mainstream media channels would offer him immediate and constant publicity.

Existing influence: Even without vying, he is frequently in the center of political calculations.

In 2022, allegations circulated that he quietly bankrolled Dr. Nicholas Kut Ochogo against the incumbent MP, Samuel Onunga Atandi.
Neither Ochogo nor Mijesh publicly denied these claims.

Despite Ochogo lacking even a third of Mijesh’s personal popularity or networks, his candidacy still shook the ground. That alone has fueled endless speculation:

“If backing someone else caused such tremors, what happens if he runs himself?”

In whispered political circles, the comparison is already made:
Mijesh is to Siaya what Jimi Wanjigi is to national politics — wealthy, influential, enigmatic, and capable of bankrolling a political machine if he chooses.

To the public, Mijesh remains a humble engineer and businessman; to insiders, he is a man whose influence extends far beyond tenders and contracts.

Whether he chooses to remain a kingmaker behind the curtain or becomes the main actor on the 2027 ballot, one reality is clear:

Engineer Martine “Mijesh” Otieno is no longer just a successful contractor — he is a political equation Siaya must solve.

In a county buzzing with speculation and shifting loyalties, he is undoubtedly one of the most compelling people to watch.
