Migori County was a sea of culture, colour and competition on Friday as the 5th edition of the Piny Luo Cultural Festival burst into life at the iconic Sony Sugar Stadium, drawing top political leaders, sports fans and cultural enthusiasts from across the region.
Governors James Orengo (Siaya), Gladys Wanga (Homa Bay) and host Ochilo Ayacko (Migori) were joined by ODM Party Leader Dr. Oburu Oginga as thousands of fans thronged the stadium to witness the highly anticipated finals football match between Kisumu and Migori counties, marking a pulsating Day Two of the Piny Luo celebrations.
The annual cultural extravaganza, which seeks to unite the Luo nation socially and economically, also brings together Luo communities and neighbouring cousins from Uganda, Tanzania, the Democratic Republic of Congo and parts of South Sudan, reinforcing shared heritage beyond borders.
The headline football clash lived up to expectations, ending in a tense draw after regular time and forcing a dramatic penalty shootout. In the end, Kisumu edged out Migori 5–4 on penalties, sending their supporters into wild celebrations and cementing the match as one of the festival’s standout moments.

The day’s sporting activities were held in honour of ODM founder and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, celebrating his enduring legacy in Kenya’s democratic struggle, devolution journey and national politics.
Away from the main stadium, cultural games and interactions unfolded at the historic Thimlich Ohinga beaches, where women’s beach volleyball competitions thrilled spectators, with contestants battling for top prize categories amid a festive lakeside atmosphere.
Winners across all sporting and cultural categories will be officially awarded during the closing ceremony on Saturday, to be presided over by Ker Odungi Randa, Dr. Oburu Oginga, and the participating governors, including Orengo, Wanga, Ochilo and their Kisumu counterpart.
The grand curtain-raiser will be held at Rongo University Campus, where President William Ruto is expected to join ODM leadership and county bosses to officially close this year’s Piny Luo Cultural Festival.
As Migori plays host to culture, sport and politics in one sweeping spectacle, Piny Luo 2025 once again proves to be more than a festival — it is a powerful statement of unity, identity and shared destiny.
