Four members of former Chief Justice David Maraga’s campaign team were injured on Tuesday night after a vehicle in his convoy was involved in a horrific road accident while returning to Nairobi from Nyamira.
The accident occurred at night and involved a salon car carrying members of Maraga’s team, which was involved in a head-on collision with a lorry. The former Chief Justice, who is the United Green Movement (UGM) Party presidential aspirant for the 2027 General Election, was traveling in a separate vehicle and escaped unhurt.
Shortly after the crash, Maraga took to X (formerly Twitter) to confirm the incident, sharing disturbing images of the mangled wreckage of the salon car. In a statement, he said the injured team members had been rushed to hospital for urgent medical attention.
“We have been informed of a ghastly road accident that has occurred, involving four of our campaign team members. They have all been rushed to hospital,” Maraga said.
According to preliminary accounts from the team, the accident happened as the group was driving back to Nairobi after accompanying Maraga on his campaign tour in Nyamira County.
“We understand that a lorry veered off the road, lost control and swerved into us on our lane,” the statement added.
Maraga noted that the campaign was closely monitoring the situation and had established contact with those affected, appealing to Kenyans to keep the injured team members in their prayers as doctors and nurses worked to stabilize them.
“We are following the situation closely. We are in touch with our colleagues. We ask that you keep them in prayer as the doctors and nurses attend to them,” he said.
By the time of publication, details regarding the identities of the injured individuals and the specific health facilities where they were admitted had not been disclosed.
The incident comes at a time when Maraga has officially hit the campaign trail ahead of the 2027 presidential election. While he remains a respected figure nationally, political observers note that his popularity has waned compared to his tenure as Chief Justice, when he was widely celebrated as a symbol of judicial independence and moral rectitude.
