Siaya Governor James Orengo on Wednesday joined family members, friends and a host of national leaders at the home of the late former Lugari MP Hon. Cyrus Shakhalaga Khwa Jirongo, as burial preparations entered their final phase ahead of his interment on 30 December 2025.
The leaders — who separately converged at the homestead to condole with the bereaved family — included National Assembly Speaker Hon. Moses Wetang’ula, Roots Party leader Prof. George Luchiri Wajackoyah, MPs, county leaders and community elders, underscoring the wide national respect commanded by the fallen politician.
Jirongo’s home in Kakamega County has in recent days become a centre of mourning and reflection, drawing delegations from across the political divide as Kenyans come to terms with the loss of a man many describe as humble, approachable and deeply committed to unity, particularly within the Luhya community and the wider Western Kenya region.
Speaking during the condolence visit, leaders paid glowing tribute to Jirongo’s legacy as a mentor to young politicians, a consensus builder and a steadfast advocate for inclusive leadership. Governor Orengo noted that Jirongo’s political life was defined not by noise or bravado, but by quiet influence, empathy and a deep sense of responsibility to his people.

The former Lugari MP died in a tragic road accident, sending shockwaves through the political class and the communities he served for decades. His sudden death cut short a life many say was still rich with counsel and service, even outside elective politics.
According to the family, burial arrangements are in high gear, with the final rites expected to draw thousands to Lumakanda as leaders and ordinary citizens alike gather to bid farewell to one of Western Kenya’s most recognisable political figures.
As the country prepares to lay him to rest, one message has stood out from the steady stream of mourners: Cyrus Jirongo will be remembered not just for the offices he held, but for the lives he touched and the bridges he built.
May his soul rest in eternal peace.
