In a significant blow to terror networks operating along Kenya’s volatile coastline, the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) has confirmed the killing of five al-Shabaab militants and the recovery of a deadly cache of weapons during an intelligence-driven operation deep inside Boni Forest, Lamu County.
The meticulously planned raid, carried out by KDF Special Forces, targeted a makeshift al-Shabaab base in Lacta Mangai, a dense section of the forest notorious for harboring extremists plotting cross-border attacks.
How the Operation Unfolded
In a Tuesday morning statement, KDF revealed the ambush was part of an intelligence-led patrol under Operation Amani Boni (OAB), a multi-agency security campaign aimed at flushing out insurgents from their hideouts.
“A Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) Special Forces team, while on an intelligence-led patrol in Lacta Mangai within the expansive Boni Forest, discovered and neutralized a makeshift al-Shabaab camp, killing five terrorists while others escaped with injuries,” the statement read.
The operation not only neutralized the combatants but also exposed the depth of al-Shabaab’s logistical network in Kenya.
Weapons Haul Uncovered
Following the gunfight, security officers seized a stockpile of sophisticated weaponry and terror logistics items, including:
AK-47 rifles
Rocket-Propelled Grenade (RPG) launchers with warheads
Hundreds of rounds of ammunition
Solar panels and tents
Bomb-making materials for Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs)
The recovery underscores the militants’ continued reliance on local forest sanctuaries to stage attacks on civilians, security forces, and critical infrastructure.
Vow to End Terror in Boni
KDF has reiterated its commitment to eradicating the militant menace once and for all.
“Operation Amani Boni remains committed to restoring lasting peace and security in the Boni region, ensuring that families can live without fear. We call on citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to support our mission,” the statement added.
The military has maintained a heavy presence in the forest since 2015 when al-Shabaab expanded its terror campaign into Kenya, launching brutal attacks on civilians and security convoys along the Lamu-Garsen road and neighboring areas.
A Pattern of Resurgence
This latest operation follows a similar pre-dawn raid on June 10 in Mandera County, where the elite Special Operations Group (SOG) intercepted militants attempting to plant an IED on the Alungu-Elwak road. Two fighters were killed in that operation, which also saw the recovery of two AK-47 rifles, an RPG warhead, and a fully assembled IED.
Security analysts say the incidents highlight al-Shabaab’s persistence despite major setbacks inflicted by Kenyan and regional forces.
Boni Forest has long been a headache for Kenya’s counter-terror units, serving as a strategic transit corridor for al-Shabaab operatives slipping in from neighboring Somalia. Experts warn that despite significant gains, dismantling entrenched cells in the forest requires consistent intelligence work, aggressive patrols, and community cooperation.
The Human Cost
The fight against al-Shabaab has come at a steep price. Just last month, three KDF soldiers were killed during a roadside IED attack in Lamu, reminding the country that victory against extremism is far from guaranteed.
Yet, Tuesday’s success in Lacta Mangai sends a strong message: Kenya is unwilling to cede an inch to terror.
Security agencies have promised an escalation of operations in the Boni enclave and beyond, with multi-agency teams intensifying surveillance and border patrols. Civilian cooperation remains pivotal as militants attempt to exploit porous terrain and remote villages for refuge.
For now, as the black flag of terror takes another hit in the Boni thickets, Kenyans can draw comfort in the unyielding resolve of their forces: “Together, we will exterminate terrorism and ensure a peaceful Boni.”
