Oversight Authority Flags Early Wins and Gaps as Kenya’s Police Intake Kicks Off
The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) on Monday rolled out a countrywide monitoring operation as the national police recruitment exercise began, reinforcing its mandate to safeguard transparency, fairness and strict adherence to the law.
IPOA officials, drawn from both the Board and the Directorate of Inspections, Monitoring and Preventive Services, were stationed at recruitment centres across all regions to observe how applicants were being vetted. Early assessments indicate that while several locations conducted the exercise with high professionalism, others showed weaknesses that require urgent attention.
The Authority confirmed that a detailed nationwide recruitment audit report will be released after the exercise. The report will highlight best-performing stations, expose areas of concern and outline actionable recommendations aimed at tightening professionalism and promoting public confidence in future recruitments.
For over a decade, IPOA has monitored every police recruitment drive, playing a critical role in curbing malpractice, enhancing accountability and protecting the integrity of one of the country’s most sensitive public processes.
With thousands of candidates turning up across Kenya, IPOA’s presence is expected to deter irregularities such as bribery, favouritism and procedural breaches—issues that have historically undermined police intake exercises.
As the recruitment continues, IPOA insists that independent oversight remains essential to ensuring that Kenya’s police service attracts qualified, disciplined and ethically grounded officers who meet the standards expected by the public.
