Got Rateng village in Mbita is awash with gossip and disbelief after a steamy night between a 48-year-old widow and her 23-year-old lover ended in sudden death.
The widow, who had been in a secret relationship with the young man for two years, reportedly collapsed in the middle of an intimate session in a bush thicket, leaving her youthful partner in panic.
According to locals, the affair began after the man “inherited” her following her husband’s death, a tradition still practiced in parts of Luo land.
The fateful night began at a local drinking joint where the two were seen laughing and enjoying themselves. They later took a boda boda home but got off midway, slipping into a nearby thicket for privacy.
Moments later, tragedy struck. The widow slumped and collapsed, leaving her toyboy lover screaming for help. Villagers rushed to the scene only to find her lifeless.
“The young man shouted like a child. We found him shaking and holding her, saying she was not breathing,” said one shocked resident.
Police officers later confirmed her death, noting there were no visible injuries. The body was transferred to the Mbita Hospital mortuary for postmortem.
But in the village, tongues are still wagging. Some blamed alcohol. “They had been drinking heavily; maybe her body just gave up,” a villager whispered.
Others hinted at her age. “She was older, and people say she was too deep into this young man. Maybe her heart could not take it anymore,” another resident added.
Still, a section of locals claim the passion itself was too much. “That boy is too energetic. She loved him too much, but maybe it was more than her body could handle,” one elder muttered.
Meanwhile, police have arrested the 23-year-old lover, insisting it is routine until the autopsy report is out.
