Fresh details have emerged in the investigation into the fatal road traffic accident that claimed the life of former legislator and political power broker Hon. Cyrus Jirongo, with the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) confirming that a comprehensive inquiry is nearing completion and will soon be forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for appropriate action.
In an update issued on Tuesday, the DCI said detectives are pursuing a wide-ranging, methodical and evidence-driven investigation into the crash that occurred on the night of December 13, 2025, at Karai area along the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway, one of Kenya’s busiest and most accident-prone corridors.
According to the DCI, investigators have so far recorded statements from 28 individuals, drawn from both public and private spheres, as authorities piece together the final moments leading to the tragic accident.
Among those who voluntarily recorded statements is National Assembly Speaker Rt. Hon. Moses Masika Wetang’ula, who cooperated with investigators during the early stages of the probe. Also questioned are Hon. George Khaniri, a close confidant of the late Jirongo, and his wife Ms. Eunice Chelagat, both of whom played a key role on the day of the incident.
Detectives confirmed that Hon. Khaniri and his wife visited the accident scene shortly after the crash and assisted in facilitating the transfer of Hon. Jirongo’s body from Naivasha Sub-County Hospital Mortuary to Lee Funeral Home in Nairobi.
In a significant development, seven passengers from the ill-fated bus involved in the crash have also come forward to record statements, providing first-hand accounts that investigators say are crucial in reconstructing the sequence of events.
The DCI further revealed that a post-mortem examination conducted on the deceased established that Hon. Jirongo sustained severe crush injuries, including a broken sternum and lacerations to the heart, liver and kidneys. The pathologist conclusively determined the cause of death as multiple crush injuries resulting from blunt force trauma, consistent with a high-impact collision.
Despite the progress made, the DCI expressed concern over speculation and unverified claims circulating in the public domain, warning that such statements risk undermining the integrity of the investigation.
“The Directorate urges media houses, political leaders and members of the public to exercise restraint and refrain from making unsubstantiated statements that may prejudice ongoing investigations, cause unnecessary public anxiety, or unfairly injure the character of individuals who have fully cooperated with investigators,” the statement read.
As the nation awaits the DPP’s decision, the DCI reaffirmed its commitment to impartial, thorough and expeditious investigations, vowing that the truth behind the death of one of Kenya’s most enigmatic political figures will be pursued strictly in accordance with the law.
The final inquiry file is expected to be submitted to the DPP in the coming days, marking a critical milestone in a case that has gripped the country since December.
