Mombasa, February 11, 2026 – In a stunning move that has sent shockwaves through Kenyan politics, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has dramatically relieved Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna of his duties as Secretary General with immediate effect.
The decision came during a high-stakes National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held in Mombasa on Wednesday, where party leaders cited growing concerns over indiscipline at the senior leadership level and violations of party protocol. The NEC emphasized that ODM operates under its constitution, the rule of law, and collective decision-making, signaling a push to restore order amid internal rifts.
“Having deliberated on matters relating to the conduct of the Secretary General, Senator Edwin Sifuna, the NEC resolved to remove him from office with immediate effect in accordance with the party constitution and applicable laws,” said Busia Woman Representative Catherine Omanyo in a statement.
Omanyo, previously a Deputy Secretary General, has been appointed to act in the role until a substantive replacement is elected. The move follows recent calls from figures like former national chairperson John Mbadi for Sifuna’s expulsion, accusing him of defying party leader Oburu Odinga and the collective will of the party.
Sifuna, a vocal critic and key Raila Odinga ally, has been a prominent face of ODM’s opposition stance. His removal comes at a critical time as the party gears up for the 2027 elections, with reports of deeper divisions—including debates over coalitions like Azimio and internal alignments.
Social media erupted with reactions, with some supporters declaring “NO SIFUNA, NO ODM” and others predicting the party’s decline. Speculation is rife about Sifuna’s next move, with whispers he could align elsewhere or challenge the decision.
This purge marks one of the boldest internal actions in ODM’s recent history, raising questions about unity in Kenya’s largest opposition party. As the dust settles, all eyes are on how this reshuffle will reshape the political landscape ahead of 2027.
