A 22-storey building under construction in Westlands partially collapsed late Wednesday night, trapping workers under rubble along School Lane near Bank of Africa.
The incident occurred around 8 pm. Four workers were on site: two escaped unhurt, while the other two were buried. Rescue teams, including Kenya Red Cross, worked through the night.
By Thursday morning, authorities confirmed one fatality and three survivors rescued—one injured. All workers are now accounted for.
Nairobi Police Commander Issa Mohamud noted: “We don’t know why they were working at night. Investigations are ongoing.”
The site is cordoned off. Police, Nairobi County and the National Construction Authority have launched a joint probe into the cause and the unusual night-time activity.
The tragedy follows a deadly collapse in Kericho hours earlier and a fatal demolition mishap in Shauri Moyo days ago, intensifying public anger over repeated safety failures, lax enforcement and unregulated construction across Nairobi.

As Westlands reels from yet another loss, pressure mounts on authorities to enforce stricter standards before more lives are claimed.
