Migori County is stepping into a new chapter of economic promise following the rollout of a Ksh 300 million upgrade of Migori Airstrip, a project poised to redefine the region’s role in Kenya’s tourism and aviation landscape.
The facelift, spearheaded by the Kenya Airports Authority, will see the transformation of the modest airstrip into a modern regional airport. Plans include the construction of a new passenger terminal and the extension of the runway from 1.2 kilometres to 2 kilometres, enabling the facility to handle larger aircraft and significantly boost passenger traffic.
Once complete, the upgraded airport is expected to handle up to half a million passengers annually, a sharp rise from its current capacity. This positions Migori as a strategic aviation gateway not only for the county but for the wider South Nyanza region.
At the heart of the project is a broader vision—to unlock the untapped tourism and trade potential of western Kenya. Migori’s proximity to the Maasai Mara–Serengeti ecosystem places it at a critical junction of one of Africa’s most celebrated wildlife corridors. With improved air connectivity, tourists will find it easier to access this cross-border circuit, opening new routes between Kenya and Tanzania.
The upgraded airport is also expected to pave the way for future international operations, including the possible introduction of immigration services. This would allow seamless travel for tourists and investors moving across the Kenya–Tanzania border, reinforcing Migori’s position as a regional hub.
Beyond tourism, the economic ripple effects are expected to be far-reaching. The project is likely to stimulate growth in hospitality, transport, retail, and agriculture, sectors that stand to benefit from faster and more reliable connectivity. Local businesses, particularly those dealing in fresh produce and fish from the Lake Victoria basin, could gain access to quicker markets.
The upgrade builds on recent milestones that saw commercial flights launched between Migori and Nairobi via Wilson Airport, signaling growing confidence in the region’s aviation potential. With enhanced infrastructure, Migori is now better positioned to attract more airlines and increased flight frequency.
Governor Ochilo Ayacko has welcomed the development, describing it as a transformative investment that will stimulate local enterprise and create new opportunities for residents. Neighboring counties such as Homa Bay, Kisii, and Nyamira are also expected to benefit from the improved connectivity.
The project aligns with the national government’s push to strengthen regional infrastructure under its economic transformation agenda—shifting growth beyond traditional urban centers and into emerging regional hubs.
