County moves to turn culture, heritage and sports into a thriving economic engine

Siaya, Kenya — Siaya County has launched an aggressive eco-tourism and talent development strategy, betting on its rich cultural heritage and growing sports profile to drive economic growth, attract visitors, and create jobs.

At the centre of the push is the Department of Tourism, Culture, Sports and Arts, led by CECM Dr. Nicholas Kut Kochogo and Chief Officer Wilfred Ouma Nyagudi, who have hit the ground running with a countywide development tour aligned to the FY2026/27 budget.

The initiative seeks to transform cultural sites, artefacts and museums into vibrant economic hubs. Leading the charge, Dr. Kut and his team began their tour at the Gem artefact site, curated by acclaimed local artist David Marenya.

The site showcases a rich blend of indigenous craftsmanship—from beadwork and leather products to wooden musical instruments and traditional Luo regalia—offering a glimpse into the county’s cultural depth and commercial potential.

Dr. Kut said the county will strengthen Project Management Committees (PMCs) through legislation to protect cultural sites from encroachment while ensuring they are professionally managed for sustainable tourism.

“Our goal is simple—preserve our heritage, commercialize it responsibly, and ensure it delivers real income for our people,” he said.

He added that the county will promote local production of cultural attire, particularly traditional Luo council of elders regalia, to spur small-scale manufacturing and reduce reliance on imports.

In Gem South, officials inspected the Odera Akango cultural site, where construction of a modern artefacts and curio gallery is nearing completion. Key facilities, including water supply, sanitation and an administration block, are in the final stages.

Similar eco-tourism circuits are planned for Bondo and Rarieda sub-counties as part of a broader strategy to position Siaya as a competitive cultural tourism destination.

Beyond culture, the county is leveraging sports infrastructure as a catalyst for economic activity. Investments in stadiums across all 30 wards are already paying dividends.

The Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Stadium has emerged as a major attraction, recently hosting the KICOSCA Games that drew delegations from all 43 counties—injecting life into local businesses across transport, hospitality and retail sectors.

From boda boda operators to hoteliers and small traders, the benefits of sports tourism are spreading across the local economy.

The tour brought together key technical officers, including Senior Tourism Officer Emily Etyang, Principal Administrator Josephine Odui, Sports Officer Joshua Odhiambo and sub-county administrators—signaling a coordinated, multi-sector approach.

Dr. Kut underscored a results-driven agenda, pledging sustained momentum in delivering practical, high-impact initiatives.

“We are focused on execution. This is about unlocking opportunity, creating jobs and improving livelihoods across Siaya,” he said.

With culture, tourism and sports now firmly embedded in its economic strategy, Siaya is positioning itself as an emerging hub for eco-tourism and creative enterprise—where heritage is not just preserved, but transformed into prosperity.
