In every political administration there are the public faces, and then there are the individuals who work behind the scenes ensuring the machinery of power runs smoothly.

In Siaya County, few people fit that description better than Fred Ojode Owuor, the reserved and largely unseen Personal Assistant to Governor James Aggrey Bob Orengo.

Originally from Rarieda Sub-County, Ojode is among the least publicly known members of the governor’s inner circle despite occupying one of the closest positions to the county chief. Public records show that he was formally appointed as Orengo’s personal assistant shortly after the governor assumed office in 2022, although there are claims that he served in the same role while the governor was senator. At the time of his official appointment, he was identified as a holder of a Diploma in Community Health and Development, offering one of the few glimpses into his professional background.

Since then, Ojode has become a familiar figure within county government circles, often accompanying the governor during official engagements, political consultations and community functions. Yet unlike many political aides who cultivate public personas, he has chosen a path of discretion.

That discretion has contributed to an aura of mystery around him.

Within Siaya’s political ecosystem, Ojode is widely viewed as one of the governor’s most trusted aides. The role of a personal assistant to a governor extends beyond managing schedules and correspondence. It often requires coordinating meetings, managing access, maintaining political relationships and ensuring the governor’s day-to-day operations run efficiently.

Those who understand the workings of county governments note that such positions naturally carry influence. While influence does not necessarily translate into formal authority, proximity to power often places trusted aides in positions where they become important conduits of information and coordination. And Ojode is all that.

Little is publicly documented about Ojode’s career trajectory before his appointment to the governor’s office. What is known is that he has remained a loyal member of Orengo’s political team and has maintained that loyalty while avoiding the limelight that often accompanies political power.

Colleagues describe him as measured, deliberate and intensely private. Outside official duties, he rarely grants interviews and seldom features in public political debates. Even as social media increasingly shapes Kenya’s political discourse, Ojode has largely remained a background figure rather than a public commentator.

Unverified reports indicate that he manages a team of local social media influencers also known as sangwenyas supportive of the Nyalore regime, but just like everything else about him this too remains hush-hush.

From his first floor top of the stairs office in the county headquarters, Ojode commands indeterminate influence only known by those who get close enough to interact with the center of power.

That low-profile approach stands in sharp contrast to the highly visible political environment in which he operates.

As Governor Orengo’s administration approaches a defining moment of it’s tenure, Ojode remains one of the most intriguing figures in Siaya politics—not because of what is publicly known about him, but because of how much remains unknown.

In an age where visibility is often equated with influence, Fred Ojode has built a reputation through something rarer in politics: staying out of the spotlight while remaining close to the centre of power.
