A dramatic police manhunt is underway for Kuresoi North MP Alfred Mutai after a political rally spiralled into chaos, leaving three people with gunshot wounds and exposing deepening fault lines in Kenya’s increasingly volatile political landscape.

The violence erupted Friday at Sirikwa Umoja Grounds in Kuresoi Sub-County during a youth empowerment event attended by Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika, Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi, and Bahati MP Irene Njoki.

What began as a routine political gathering quickly descended into disorder as rival factions — reportedly aligned to Mutai and Governor Kihika — clashed, triggering panic, gunfire, and destruction.

Police say at least three victims were shot and rushed to hospital as security teams struggled to restore order. In a further escalation, a bus transporting event equipment was torched by unidentified individuals, sending thick plumes of smoke over the venue.

In a strongly worded statement, National Police Service (NPS) spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga confirmed Mutai is the prime suspect and is currently evading arrest.

“We are actively pursuing the suspect, Hon. Alfred Mutai, who is on the run. Officers have launched a manhunt to apprehend him and all those linked to this incident,” Nyaga said.

Authorities have called on the legislator to surrender immediately and assist investigators.

The NPS issued a firm warning against the rising trend of politically instigated violence, vowing decisive action against perpetrators — including powerful political figures.

“No one, regardless of status or political office, is above the law,” Nyaga emphasized.

The agency further cautioned leaders against mobilizing or inciting supporters, noting that such actions threaten public safety and democratic order.

The Nakuru clash adds to a troubling pattern of political intolerance, where rival camps increasingly resort to confrontation rather than dialogue. Analysts warn that the normalisation of violence at grassroots events could erode public trust and destabilize local governance structures.

With tensions simmering and political activity intensifying across the country, pressure is mounting on security agencies to act swiftly — and impartially.

For now, all eyes are on whether police will net the fugitive MP — and whether Kenya’s political class will pull back from the brink.
