Siaya Today is trusted by many readers in Kenya and beyond as an authoritative voice of news, information and political analysis from Siaya County. That trust is a responsibility we do not take lightly.

As a publication operating in an increasingly fast-moving political environment, we recognize that our greatest obligation is not merely to publish compelling stories, but to ensure that what we publish is accurate, fair, properly contextualized and subjected to the highest possible standards of factual verification.

It is against this background that Siaya Today wishes to sincerely and unreservedly apologize for an opinion article published on our website this morning under the headline, “Nairobi Power Lunch Fuels Siaya 2027 Succession Plot: Is the Okode–Oduol Ticket Taking Shape?”

The article, which carried the byline of our Editor-in-Chief, sought to analyse the political significance of a Nairobi luncheon involving a number of prominent Siaya leaders and the possible implications of the gathering for the 2027 gubernatorial contest.

While the article was expressly framed as political analysis and repeatedly acknowledged that there was no formal communiqué or public confirmation of an Okode–Oduol ticket, we acknowledge that one particular aspect of the article went beyond what the established facts could properly sustain.

The suggestion that Dr William Odhiambo Oduol Denge could be positioned as the running mate to Speaker George Owino Okode was misleading and ought not to have been presented even as an emerging political arrangement without firm factual confirmation.

For that, we are deeply sorry.

On behalf of DALANEWSKE INVESTMENT management, the Editor-in-Chief unreservedly apologizes to Dr William Odhiambo Oduol Denge, Speaker George Owino Okode, the leaders who attended the Nairobi luncheon, their supporters and indeed every reader who may have been misled, offended or otherwise aggrieved by that representation.

The facts, as we now understand and confirm them, are considerably clearer.

No agreement was reached at the Nairobi luncheon to make Dr William Oduol Denge the running mate of George Okode.

More importantly, Dr William Oduol Denge remains firmly in the gubernatorial race as an aspirant for Governor of Siaya County and is not an aspirant for the position of Deputy Governor.

That distinction is fundamental, and Siaya Today takes full responsibility for failing to make it sufficiently clear in the article.

Political journalism, particularly in the run-up to a General Election, requires a careful distinction between fact, interpretation, speculation and political possibility. A photograph of political leaders sharing a table can legitimately generate questions and analysis. It cannot, by itself, establish the existence of a political pact, agreement or succession arrangement.

That is where our judgement fell short.

The article correctly observed that the Nairobi luncheon was politically interesting and that the gathering could generate speculation about the evolving 2027 contest. However, the analysis should not have allowed that speculation to create an impression that Dr Oduol had already been assigned the position of running mate to Mr Okode.

We therefore withdraw that suggestion and replace it with the correct position: Dr William Oduol Denge is pursuing the Siaya governorship in his own right.

This clarification is particularly important because the 2027 Siaya gubernatorial contest remains fluid, competitive and open. Aspirants have every right to define their ambitions and political positions independently, and the media must not inadvertently create alliances or political arrangements that the individuals concerned have neither announced nor agreed to.

The incident is also a useful reminder of the distinction between an opinion piece and factual reporting.

An opinion article gives a publication greater latitude to interpret political developments, examine possible scenarios and ask difficult questions. It does not, however, suspend the fundamental journalistic obligation to distinguish clearly between what is known and what is inferred.

Indeed, the fact that the article was an opinion piece makes verification no less important. If anything, political analysis requires an even more disciplined presentation of evidence because readers may rely on such analysis to understand complicated political developments.

While in office CPA Dr William Oduol Denge was a natural leader who did not demand respect, people gave it naturally

Siaya Today therefore accepts that the responsibility for this error rests with us.

We do not seek to hide behind the fact that the article was analytical in nature, nor do we seek to diminish the concerns that may have arisen from it. We got an important fact wrong, and we are correcting the record openly.

Our readers deserve nothing less.

We also wish to clarify that the original article was not intended to declare an agreed political ticket involving Mr Okode and Dr Oduol, nor was it intended to suggest that Dr Oduol had abandoned his gubernatorial ambition.

The reference to a possible Okode–Oduol combination was an inference drawn from the political composition of the luncheon and the broader succession debate. That inference, however, should never have been allowed to acquire the appearance of an established political fact.

Going forward, Siaya Today will continue to scrutinize the political developments surrounding the 2027 Siaya gubernatorial contest, including the ambitions of George Owino Okode, William Odhiambo Oduol Denge, David Ochieng, Nicholas Odero Gumbo and other political actors.

But we shall endeavour to do so with the discipline that our readers expect and the fairness that the contestants deserve.

Siaya politics is too important to be reduced to rumours presented as facts. The 2027 gubernatorial contest will shape the county’s political direction for years to come, and citizens deserve robust debate, competing ideas and vigorous scrutiny of every aspirant.

They also deserve journalism that tells them precisely what has happened, what has been said, what is alleged and what remains speculation.

That is the standard Siaya Today intends to uphold.

We once again sincerely apologise to Dr William Odhiambo Oduol Denge and to everyone who may have been affected by the inaccurate impression created by the article.

CPA Dr. William Oduol Denge

The record is now clear:

There was no agreement at the Nairobi luncheon making Dr William Oduol Denge the running mate of George Owino Okode. Dr Oduol remains a gubernatorial aspirant, pursuing the seat of Governor of Siaya County.

Siaya Today regrets the error and appreciates our readers for holding us accountable.

Our credibility belongs to our readers. We shall continue working to earn it every day.
