Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga has thrown his full support behind Siaya Governor James Aggrey Bob Orengo, describing him as his “best bet” for the county’s leadership amid rising political manoeuvres and succession talk.
Speaking at Ndori Primary School in Gem Constituency during a church fundraising drive, Raila dismissed rumours that Orengo had resigned, terming them malicious propaganda crafted by “power-hungry politicians” intent on destabilising the county.
“Orengo is my best bet for Siaya. I have confidence and trust in him compared to those who are busy plotting for his downfall,” Raila declared.
He accused certain leaders of circulating a fake resignation letter to Siaya County Assembly Speaker George Okode and even peddling false claims about Orengo’s health and death.

“I talk to Orengo daily on phone, and he has never mentioned resigning. These busybodies are fabricating letters and even wishing him death. That is pure witchcraft,” Raila said.
The former Prime Minister emphasised that all public officers, including governors, have the right to take time off for rest or medical check-ups, and such breaks cannot be used as grounds for removal from office. He described Orengo as “re-energised, sharp and ready to roar” after his recent absence from the public eye, likening those pushing for his downfall to “men who want to inherit a woman whose husband is still alive.”
Orengo Breaks Silence
Governor Orengo later addressed residents at Siala Kaduol during the opening of a hall built by nominated MCA Dora Achieng, telling his critics that he remains firmly grounded in service.
Quoting scripture, he likened himself to a tree rooted by the river that thrives even in times of drought.
“Those wishing me death will not succeed. My roots are firmly planted by the stream, and I shall continue to bear fruit for the people of Siaya,” Orengo said.
He also warned against attempts to dilute ODM’s strength through political mergers ahead of 2027, insisting that the party remains Raila’s strongest bargaining tool.
“Even President William Ruto had to seek Jakom’s [Raila’s] support when the country was on the brink. That is the power of ODM. Without it, leaders like former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua have faded into political obscurity,” Orengo remarked.
ODM Unity
Siaya County Assembly Speaker George Okode backed Raila and Orengo, reiterating that the county remains firmly under ODM’s control.
“Siaya is run by ODM, and it will not slide off the rail,” Okode said.

The remarks come against a backdrop of heightened succession talk in Siaya, but Raila’s endorsement has reaffirmed Orengo’s place at the helm. By calling him his “best bet,” the ODM leader has not only silenced the rumour mill but also strengthened Orengo’s grip on county politics as the 2027 race looms.
