Mwer Village in Sigoma Uranga Sub-Location, West Alego, was abuzz with joy and gratitude today as Eng. Nicholas Odero Gumbo Wajonya made a heartfelt donation of sports kits—including footballs and volleyballs—to Mwer Comprehensive School. The gesture, though simple in appearance, carried deep meaning for the learners and the community, reflecting Gumbo’s long-standing commitment to youth empowerment and grassroots development.
Speaking during the handover, the former legislator reminded the audience that sports is not merely recreation but a discipline that cultivates teamwork, resilience, and self-confidence. “Sports is not just a pastime. It is a platform through which discipline, teamwork, and resilience are nurtured. My prayer is that these balls will not only keep our children active but also inspire them to pursue their potential with courage and determination,” Gumbo remarked.
For the students, who often make do with improvised play tools, the donation was a priceless boost. Teachers noted that such support was rare but vital, enabling the learners to balance academics with co-curricular growth. Parents and community members equally praised the initiative, describing it as a much-needed “breath of inspiration” for their children.
Gumbo’s Track Record in Community Empowerment

This was not the first time Eng. Gumbo has directly invested in the welfare of Siaya residents. As the former Member of Parliament for Rarieda Constituency, he carved a reputation for championing education, rural electrification, and water projects. His tenure was marked by investments in schools, bursary support for needy learners, and infrastructural improvements that opened up rural communities to new opportunities.
Even after leaving Parliament, Gumbo has maintained his footprint in Siaya’s social development space, engaging with grassroots initiatives and responding to community needs in health, education, and now, youth sports.
Political Undercurrents: A Calculated Gesture
While Gumbo’s act of philanthropy touched hearts, it also carried a distinct political undertone. Having twice vied for the Siaya gubernatorial seat—in 2017 and 2022—he has signaled his determination to take a third shot at the county’s top job in the upcoming elections.
Notably, his latest gesture took place not in his Rarieda backyard, but in West Alego, deep within Alego-Usonga Constituency— next door to Ugenya where the current Governor James Aggrey Bob Orengo was groundbreaking for a hospital annex construction. Political observers were quick to interpret this as a deliberate attempt to extend his reach, revive grassroots networks, and consolidate early support in Alego-Usonga now that homeboy Dr. William Oduol Denge is at loggerheads with the Governor .
By engaging directly with communities in Alego, Gumbo is effectively sending a message: his gubernatorial ambitions are countywide, and he intends to plant seeds of loyalty in areas long dominated by rivals. To many residents present, his donation was more than charity—it was the opening of political courtship ahead of a fierce succession battle.
The Road Ahead
Governor Orengo, who is serving his first term, remains a formidable force in Siaya politics. Yet Gumbo’s persistence—buoyed by his technocratic credentials, clean governance record, and grassroots outreach—makes him a contender who cannot be dismissed. Today’s event at Mwer Comprehensive School may appear modest, but it fits neatly into a larger strategy of building bridges, winning hearts, and quietly laying campaign foundations.
As students kicked their new footballs and volleyed balls over makeshift nets, their laughter symbolized more than play. It was also the soundtrack to a subtle but clear political statement: Gumbo is back in the field, and this time, his eyes are firmly on Siaya governor’s seat.
