Siaya’s women’s volleyball team has announced its arrival in emphatic fashion, crushing Makueni 3-0 in a dominant opening performance at the 11th Edition of the Kenya Youth Inter-County Sports Association (KYISA) Championships in Nyahururu, Laikipia County.
In a tournament that has long tested the county’s resolve, this resounding 25-12, 25-10, 25-17 victory is more than just a winning start — it is a bold statement of intent.
From the first serve, Siaya’s queens displayed cohesion, precision, and hunger, overwhelming their opponents with relentless attacking and disciplined defense. At the heart of the triumph was the ever-reliable Rehema Akinyi, whose clinical spikes and match-high points powered Siaya to a historic breakthrough.
She found strong support in the formidable duo of Nelifin Adhiambo and Nan Rubbie, whose presence at the net proved decisive, shutting down Makueni’s advances and anchoring Siaya’s dominance.
Head coach Geophrey Odeny, overseeing his debut campaign, hailed the result as a defining moment for the team and the county.

“This is historic for Siaya. This young squad has shown what is possible. It restores belief and confidence — we have started on the right foot and we are firmly on the right path,” he said.
The victory underscores years of quiet investment, resilience, and determination that have shaped Siaya’s volleyball journey. For a team often defined by grit, this performance signals the emergence of a fearless new generation ready to compete at the highest level.
Director of Sports Sanmac Okoth echoed the optimism, praising the team’s fighting spirit and early momentum in the competition.
“Our volleyball ladies have made us proud. Their stars are rising right from the start of these games. They showed character and determination against a tough Makueni side,” he noted.
With confidence surging, Siaya now turns its focus to the next challenge, where they are set to face Busia in a highly anticipated midweek clash. The team remains bullish about its chances, insisting the opening win is only the beginning of a bigger campaign.
Beyond volleyball, Siaya’s ambitions stretch across multiple disciplines, with basketball, football, and handball teams also eyeing strong performances. In football, Siaya’s men have been drawn in a competitive Pool C alongside Tharaka Nithi, Busia, and Tana River, with their first match against Tana River scheduled for Wednesday morning. The women’s football team will kick off their campaign against Meru.
As over 200 athletes from Siaya compete in Nyahururu, the message is clear: the county is not just participating — it is here to contend.
And if the volleyball queens’ electrifying start is anything to go by, Siaya’s campaign at KYISA may well be one to remember.
