Migori County burst into colour, culture and unity as the 5th Edition of the Piny Luo Cultural Festival officially kicked off at Rongo University, drawing hundreds of attendees who braved heavy rains to celebrate Luo heritage in all its richness.
Presiding over the vibrant opening ceremony, Luo Ker Council of Elders Chairman Ker Odungi Randa warmly welcomed Luo nation leaders and elders from across the region, turning the event into a powerful symbol of cross-border unity. Delegations arrived from South Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda and Ethiopia, underscoring the deep cultural bonds that transcend modern national boundaries.
In a solemn but uplifting moment, Ker Randa led participants in a moment of honour for veteran freedom fighter and former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga, hailing his enduring contribution to Kenya’s democratic journey and the Luo nation’s political consciousness.
“Piny Luo is not just a festival; it is a reaffirmation of who we are as a people, united by history, culture and shared destiny,” Ker Randa said.
Among the distinguished guests was Ochieng Gideon Ochieng, a respected Luo elder from the Pajok community in South Sudan, whose presence highlighted the strong cultural links between Luo communities across borders. Also in attendance was Mshangia Ongato, a Luo elder from Tanzania and chairman within the community, further reinforcing the festival’s Pan-Luo character.
Despite relentless downpours, hundreds turned out in large numbers, refusing to let the weather dampen their spirits. Traditional music, dance, storytelling and cultural exhibitions transformed the Rongo University grounds into a living museum of Luo identity, resilience and pride.
The Piny Luo Cultural Festival has steadily grown into one of the most significant cultural events in the region, providing a platform for intergenerational dialogue, cultural preservation and unity among Luo communities in East Africa and beyond.
Photojournalist Samson Wire also observed that regardless of their location fairly all Luo nation elders spoke rich mother-tongue with diverse accents, and when need arises, impeccable English!
As Migori County played host to this year’s celebrations, one message rang clear through the rain-soaked festivities: the Luo nation remains united, proud and firmly rooted in its heritage.
