Migori County is on the cusp of an economic transformation after Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo announced that the Migori County Aggregation and Industrial Park has entered its final phase of construction, bringing the region closer to a major agro-industrial revolution.

In an update issued on Sunday, June 14, Omollo revealed that the multi-billion-shilling project is nearing completion, with key infrastructure already in place and finishing works currently underway.

The industrial park, a joint venture between the national government and the Migori County Government, sits on a sprawling 100-acre site at Macalder Kanyarwanda in Nyatike Constituency and is expected to become one of the largest agro-processing hubs in the region.

According to the PS, the facility’s core infrastructure has been fully developed and includes eight large warehouses arranged in two blocks, an administrative complex, a central powerhouse, a main store, a water tank, and an ablution facility.

“The project has progressed into its final phase, with internal floor tiling underway and external cabro works shaping access roads and walkways,” Omollo stated.

Once operational, the industrial park will serve as a centralized aggregation, storage, processing, and manufacturing center for a wide range of agricultural products produced across Migori County.

The facility is designed to support key value chains including fish, sweet potatoes, sugarcane, rice, maize, and horticultural produce, positioning the county as a strategic player in Kenya’s agricultural and manufacturing sectors.

Omollo noted that the park is equipped with modern storage facilities and cold-chain systems that will significantly reduce post-harvest losses, enhance product quality, and improve returns for farmers by streamlining the agricultural value chain.

“Equipped with modern storage and cold chain systems, the facility is structured to streamline aggregation, reduce post-harvest losses and improve producer returns by minimizing inefficiencies along the value chain,” he explained.

Beyond boosting agricultural productivity, the project is expected to become a major employment engine for Migori and the wider South Nyanza region.

The Interior PS projected that the industrial park will directly and indirectly create approximately 30,000 jobs while serving all eight sub-counties of Migori County.

“The park is expected to scale county-led industrialization and generate approximately 30,000 jobs, strengthening the region’s economic potential,” Omollo added.

Analysts view the project as a critical pillar in the government’s broader agenda of promoting value addition, enhancing food security, and accelerating rural industrialization through county-based manufacturing hubs.

The update comes just days after Omollo highlighted progress in the transformation of Piny Owacho Level 3A Hospital in Uriri Constituency, another flagship project aimed at improving livelihoods in Migori County.

Speaking on June 12, the PS said ongoing healthcare reforms under the Universal Health Coverage (UHC) programme are increasingly being driven by infrastructure investments, particularly in rural areas where access to quality healthcare has historically been limited.

He noted that the upgrading of Piny Owacho Hospital has introduced critical medical services and facilities that are improving patient care while reducing referrals to distant hospitals.

With both the industrial park and healthcare upgrades gathering momentum, Migori County is steadily emerging as a focal point of government-led investments aimed at stimulating economic growth, creating jobs, and improving access to essential services.

As the final construction touches continue at the aggregation and industrial park, residents and farmers alike are looking ahead to what could become one of the most significant economic catalysts in the county’s history.
