Police in Kisumu East Sub-County have arrested a key suspect believed to be part of a notorious criminal gang that had terrorized residents of Kisumu City and its environs, recovering a cache of stolen property in a decisive intelligence-led operation.
Officers based at Gita Police Station nabbed James Kenneth Otieno following days of intensified pursuit of a gang linked to a series of robberies targeting members of the public. The crackdown gained urgency after one of Otieno’s alleged accomplices, Hussein Hassan, was lynched by a mob on January 23, 2026, after he was cornered while in possession of a stolen motorcycle.
Acting on credible intelligence that Otieno was still holding stolen items, police mounted a swift and well-coordinated raid at his residence in Kajulu Gardens, Konya sub-location. The operation yielded a significant haul, underscoring the scale of the gang’s criminal activities.
Recovered items include three motorcycles, a 65-inch Hisense television, a 12kg Menghas gas cylinder, a double-burner gas cooker, assorted mobile phones, and various motorcycle spare parts, among other valuables. Police say several of the items have already been positively identified by their rightful owners, bringing long-awaited relief to victims who had resigned themselves to their losses.
Otieno is currently in police custody undergoing processing ahead of arraignment in court. The remaining recovered goods have been secured as exhibits and will be released to their owners upon proper identification.
The arrest marks a significant breakthrough in efforts to dismantle criminal networks that have fueled insecurity in Kisumu and neighboring areas. Police reiterated their commitment to rooting out crime and safeguarding lives and property through intelligence-driven operations and community cooperation.
At the same time, the National Police Service (NPS) cautioned members of the public against taking the law into their own hands, warning that mob justice undermines the rule of law and can derail investigations. Citizens are urged to report crime through established channels and allow due process to prevail.
