Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba has announced the disbursement of Ksh9.46 billion by the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) to university students across the country.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, August 19, CS Ogamba said the funds will cater for both tuition fees and student upkeep allowances.
“We are pleased to notify parents, guardians, and university students that HELB has, as of today, disbursed a total of Ksh9.46 billion in financial support to 309,178 university students. This amount comprises Ksh5.76 billion for tuition fees and Ksh3.7 billion for student upkeep,” he said.
The CS urged beneficiaries to check their loan status on the HELB portal, noting that the government remains committed to ensuring access to affordable education.
“Students are advised to check their HELB portals to confirm receipt of the funds and to access detailed information regarding their individual HELB loan accounts,” Ogamba added.
Earlier, the government had raised HELB’s annual funding from Ksh36 billion to Ksh41 billion to meet the growing demand for financial support. According to the CS, Ksh13 billion has already been released to support tuition and upkeep, while Ksh16.9 billion has been allocated to the Universities Fund for scholarships.
At the same time, HELB revealed that applications for undergraduate and TVET loans remain open. As of August 18, 2025, a total of 961,023 students had applied for funding — with 660,560 applications from university students and 300,463 from TVET institutions.
The application window will remain open until August 31, 2025. HELB has urged eligible students to apply promptly to secure funding for the upcoming academic year.
