Residents of Chemelil in Kisumu County were left in shock after the decomposing body of a 56-year-old woman who had been missing for days was discovered floating in the Oseng’Teti River.
According to police reports, passers-by stumbled upon the body on Friday morning and immediately alerted local authorities. Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Chemelil quickly arrived at the scene, where they retrieved the remains of the woman identified as Carena Oluoch, who had reportedly disappeared on October 17.
“The body was in an advanced state of decomposition when it was recovered,” said a police source familiar with the case. “We have launched investigations to establish the circumstances that led to her death.”
Family members later confirmed the identity of the deceased, saying Oluoch had been struggling with mental instability in recent years. The heartbreaking discovery has left relatives and neighbors mourning as they await answers from investigators.
Police have not ruled out foul play, though early reports suggest the possibility of accidental drowning. The body has since been moved to Othoo Funeral Home for post-mortem examination as detectives pursue leads into the mysterious death.
The incident adds to a worrying trend of unexplained drownings and disappearances in parts of Kisumu County, sparking calls for improved mental health awareness and community safety interventions in rural areas.
