The County Government of Siaya has issued a severe weather alert following meteorological warnings that place the county among 44 counties expected to experience moderate to heavy rainfall as the seasonal rains intensify across Kenya.

The advisory calls for heightened vigilance among residents, particularly those living in flood-prone areas, near rivers and drainage channels, and in low-lying settlements where prolonged downpours can quickly turn into a public safety threat.

With Siaya County bordering Lake Victoria and traversed by rivers and streams that can swell during sustained rainfall, the prospect of heavy precipitation raises concerns about flooding, damage to homes and infrastructure, disruption of farming activities and possible waterborne diseases.

Residents are being urged to take weather warnings seriously, monitor official updates and avoid unnecessary risks whenever rainfall becomes intense.

Flood-prone areas face heightened risk

ADVERT

Heavy rainfall can overwhelm drainage systems, flood roads and footpaths, damage bridges and interrupt access to schools, health facilities and markets. Communities living near rivers, streams and low-lying sections of Alego Usonga, Bondo, Rarieda, Ugenya, Ugunja and Gem should remain alert to changing weather conditions and local flood risks.

Farmers also face the challenge of protecting crops, livestock and farm equipment from waterlogging and runoff. Where rainfall is prolonged, erosion and damage to rural access roads could further complicate the movement of agricultural produce.

The risk extends beyond flooding. Standing water can create breeding grounds for mosquitoes, while contaminated water supplies may increase the likelihood of waterborne illnesses. Households should therefore protect drinking water, maintain proper sanitation and seek safe alternatives where wells or other water sources become contaminated.

Residents urged to take precautions

Residents should avoid crossing flooded roads, rivers and drainage channels, even when the water appears shallow. Motorists should reduce speed, exercise caution on slippery roads and never attempt to drive through moving floodwater.

Households in vulnerable locations should identify safer places to move to if conditions deteriorate, secure important documents and essential medicines, and follow directions issued by relevant authorities. Parents and guardians should ensure children do not play in flooded areas or near swollen waterways.

The county government and relevant emergency agencies have an important role in ensuring that warnings reach villages promptly, drainage and other vulnerable infrastructure receive attention, and emergency response arrangements are ready where needed.

Climate preparedness requires timely information

The rainfall alert also highlights the importance of preparedness at the community level. Local administrators, public health officers, agricultural extension workers and disaster-response teams can help reduce the impact of severe weather by sharing verified information and identifying households that may require assistance.

Residents should rely on official advisories from the Kenya Meteorological Department and the County Government of Siaya rather than unverified social media messages. Anyone facing an immediate threat should seek safety and contact the relevant emergency authorities.

For Siaya, the priority is to turn the warning into practical action: protect lives, safeguard property and livelihoods, and ensure that vulnerable communities are not caught unprepared as the rains intensify.

The message is clear: stay informed, avoid floodwater and act early when conditions become dangerous.
