M-PESA Turns 19 and Smashes 40 Million Customers Milestone – Kenya’s Fintech Giant Just Got Even Bigger!

From a simple SMS money-sending hack in 2007 to a full-blown financial superpower today, M-PESA has just hit a jaw-dropping 40 million monthly active customers in Kenya – exactly on its 19th birthday.

Safaricom dropped the bombshell announcement on Thursday, confirming the mobile money pioneer has added millions of users in the past year alone and is now deeply embedded in the daily lives of nearly every Kenyan.

What started as a basic person-to-person transfer service has exploded into Kenya’s ultimate money app. Today, M-PESA isn’t just for sending cash – it’s your wallet, your bank, your investment advisor, and your business till all rolled into one.

Users now save and grow wealth with Ziidi MMF and Ziidi Trader, borrow instantly via Fuliza and KCB M-PESA, pay bills and shop with Lipa na M-PESA, run side hustles through Pochi la Biashara, and even get paid globally with Global Pay. All from a simple phone.

“Our goal is to give Kenyans – and Africa at large – digital financial tools to empower them to be more prosperous,” said Peter Ndegwa, Safaricom CEO. “Reaching 40 million monthly active customers in Kenya is a milestone we celebrate, as we recommit to enable every Kenyan to transact safely, grow their savings, and build their wealth. To us, every M-PESA transaction tells a story of someone building their future.”

Behind the explosive growth? Smart moves. Over the past 12 months, Safaricom poured cash into cutting-edge technology, beefed-up fraud prevention, and customer education. The shift to Fintech 2.0 has made the platform faster, safer, and ridiculously easy to use – even for first-time smartphone users in remote villages.

Barriers to wealth-building have crumbled. Kenyans who once couldn’t dream of investing now do it directly from their phones. Financial inclusion has never been this real.

As Africa races toward a mobile-first future, M-PESA’s story is the blueprint. Launched on March 6, 2007, the service has single-handedly transformed how money moves across the continent, proving that innovation plus inclusion equals unstoppable growth.

Ndegwa summed it up perfectly: “M-PESA remains committed to ensuring that everyone has the confidence and tools to navigate life’s financial journey.”

Nineteen years young and 40 million strong – Kenya’s favourite money app isn’t slowing down. If you’re not on M-PESA yet… what are you waiting for?

The revolution is already in your pocket.
