Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko is celebrating a major legal victory after the Court of Appeal cleared the way for him to access KSh537 million previously frozen in a corruption-related case dating back to 2019.

In a decisive ruling delivered by a three-judge bench comprising Justices Kathurima M’inoti, Chacha Mwita and Bryam Ongaya, the appellate court held that it lacked jurisdiction to grant a stay of execution against what it described as a “negative order” issued by the High Court. The decision effectively upheld an earlier ruling by High Court Judge Nixon Korir, which had ordered the unfreezing of Sonko’s bank accounts.

The Anti-Corruption Court had moved to the Court of Appeal seeking to suspend the High Court’s directive, but the appellate bench dismissed the attempt, paving the way for Sonko to regain access to the substantial funds.

In characteristic flamboyant style, Sonko took to social media to celebrate the ruling, framing it as both a personal vindication and a testament to faith. Referring to himself as a “giver,” the former governor reiterated his commitment to philanthropy, pledging that part of the recovered millions would go toward supporting the poor and vulnerable.

“Alluta continua,” Sonko declared, signaling his enduring political ambitions despite past setbacks. He also invoked biblical themes of faith and perseverance, expressing hope for a political comeback.

Sonko’s latest courtroom triumph comes years after his dramatic impeachment from office as Nairobi governor, a move widely seen by political observers as part of broader power struggles over control of the capital’s vast resources. Despite challenging the impeachment in court, the judiciary upheld his removal, forcing him out of City Hall less than two years into his term.

Since leaving office, Sonko has remained in the public eye through high-profile acts of charity—ranging from paying hospital bills and supporting bereaved families to visiting victims of tragic incidents. His continued grassroots engagement has helped sustain a loyal support base, even as his political future remains uncertain.

With this latest legal win, Sonko not only secures a significant financial boost but also reignites speculation about his next move in Kenya’s ever-dynamic political landscape.
