A fresh political storm is gathering in Siaya County as Members of the County Assembly intensify efforts to impeach Governor James Aggrey Bob Orengo, setting the stage for one of the most dramatic power struggles in Nyanza politics ahead of the 2027 elections.

The impeachment push, now gaining momentum within the Siaya County Assembly, follows outrage over remarks allegedly made by Orengo targeting Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga during a recent public event. The comments, described by critics as sexist and demeaning, have triggered sharp condemnation from MCAs, particularly members of the women’s caucus, who argue that the governor’s conduct falls short of the dignity expected from a county leader.

Siaya Assembly Majority Chief Whip Booker Bonyo has emerged as one of the loudest voices backing the impeachment campaign, declaring that MCAs will boycott executive functions until the governor publicly apologizes. Bonyo branded Orengo a “rogue governor,” signaling a widening fallout between the county executive and sections of the assembly.

Behind the scenes, however, insiders claim the impeachment drive stretches beyond Siaya’s local politics. Powerful political interests are reportedly pushing the process from outside the county, fueling speculation of deepening rivalries within the ODM political establishment and broader succession battles taking shape across Nyanza.

This is not the first time Orengo has faced threats of removal from office. In 2024 and early 2026, discontent among MCAs over stalled development projects and alleged administrative failures sparked similar impeachment murmurs, though the efforts eventually lost steam. The latest push, however, appears more coordinated and politically charged.

Should the motion secure the constitutionally required two-thirds majority in the County Assembly and survive Senate scrutiny, Deputy Governor William Oduol Denge would automatically assume office for the remainder of the term. Oduol, who has already hinted at mounting a gubernatorial bid in 2027, is widely viewed as one of the potential beneficiaries of the unfolding political crisis.

The developments have also placed Siaya County Assembly Speaker George Okode in a delicate political balancing act. Though long considered an ally of Governor Orengo, Okode is reportedly nurturing his own gubernatorial ambitions and has been quietly engaging grassroots leaders across the county. Political observers say his response to the impeachment process could shape both his future and the county’s political direction.

Even as pressure mounts locally, Orengo’s national political stature continues to rise. The veteran lawyer, former senator, and longtime opposition figure — famously nicknamed the “Walking Constitution” for his legal prowess — has increasingly positioned himself as a key voice in national discourse. His outspoken criticism of government excesses and bold political positions have fueled speculation about a possible presidential run in 2027.

Analysts say the governor appears to be steadily shifting from county politics to a broader national stage, even as turbulence engulfs his administration at home.

With political temperatures soaring and county operations increasingly threatened by paralysis, Siaya now finds itself at a critical crossroads. The coming days are expected to determine whether the impeachment motion gathers enough momentum to topple one of Kenya’s most seasoned political figures or whether Orengo will once again outmaneuver his rivals and survive the storm.

For residents of Siaya, the stakes extend beyond political supremacy. Governance, development projects, and the county’s stability now hang in the balance as ambition, loyalty, and power collide in an escalating political showdown.
