The ambitious transformation of Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Stadium is firmly on track, with Phase II of the upgrade now 70% complete, signaling a major leap forward in Siaya County’s quest to become a regional sports powerhouse.
Governor James Aggrey Bob Orengo on Monday hosted a high-level National Government delegation for an on-site inspection of the project, underscoring growing confidence in its timely delivery. The team was led by Principal Secretary for Defence Dr. Patrick Mariru and Principal Secretary for Medical Services Dr. Ouma Oluga.
The inspection aimed to evaluate construction progress, review key milestones, and reinforce collaboration between the National Government, the County Government of Siaya, and the Ministry of Defence—partners driving the development of what is envisioned as a world-class sporting facility.
Speaking during the visit, Sports Director Dr. Sanmac confirmed that the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), working closely with Governor Orengo’s administration, remain committed to completing the stadium’s playing surface to required standards by September 2026. Upcoming works include installation of a modern irrigation system and seating on newly constructed terraces.
Launched in September 2025 following a groundbreaking ceremony officiated by Defence Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya, the project has made significant strides. Construction of the perimeter wall is complete, with only finishing works such as grill installation and coping remaining. Terrace expansion is currently at 80% completion.
Phase II of the stadium upgrade is set to dramatically elevate its capacity and standards, featuring:
– Expansion of seating capacity from 5,500 to 20,000 spectators
– Construction of additional terraces
– Installation of a roof canopy
– Tarmacking of the internal ring road
– Reinforcement and elevation of the perimeter wall
– Upgrading of infrastructure to meet national and international standards
The expanded stadium is expected to reposition Siaya as a major regional sports hub, unlocking new opportunities for youth talent development and empowerment. It will also enable the county to host large-scale sporting and entertainment events, boosting sports tourism and stimulating local businesses.
Governor Orengo emphasized that the project exemplifies the power of intergovernmental collaboration in transforming critical infrastructure and creating lasting socio-economic impact.
“This is more than a stadium—it is a platform for nurturing talent, empowering our youth, and driving inclusive growth across Siaya,” he noted.
As construction steadily advances, the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Stadium upgrade stands as a flagship project—one that could redefine the sporting and economic landscape of the region for years to come.
