In December 2024 when Governor Orengo was conducting PS Raymond Omolo on a last-minute inspection of the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Stadium set to be inaugurated by two presidents and a former Prime Minister, Wandayi was holding a rally less than two hundred meters from the venue, stamping his authority as an independent key player in Siaya politics

Speculation that Energy Cabinet Secretary James Opiyo Wandayi has declared an interest in the Siaya gubernatorial race is false and misleading, a fact-check has established.

The claims, which have gained traction in recent days across political circles and social media, were firmly dismissed by Wandayi’s secretariat, which termed them outright fabrication.

“That is fake news. He has stated that he will consult widely to ensure there is no mistake in the leadership of Siaya.”

This clarification aligns with Wandayi’s own recent public pronouncements, which stop short of announcing a candidacy and instead point to a consultative approach in determining the county’s political future.

In multiple appearances, the Cabinet Secretary has emphasized the need for responsible leadership and careful decision-making, indicating that he will work with other leaders to ensure Siaya does not make what he describes as avoidable political missteps. Nowhere in his remarks has he explicitly stated that he will vie for the governor’s seat.

Even so, Wandayi’s rising political profile has continued to fuel speculation. His recent public engagements—most notably a high-attendance rally at Bar Kalare in Gem Constituency—have drawn significant grassroots attention, reinforcing perceptions that he remains a formidable force in the county’s political landscape.

Analysts, however, caution against equating popularity with intent. While large, organic crowds often signal political strength, they do not necessarily translate into a declaration of candidacy.

Wandayi’s political history further complicates the narrative. In the run-up to the 2022 general election, he was widely viewed as a strong contender for the Siaya governorship before stepping aside following internal consultations that ultimately backed James Orengo. That decision, insiders say, may have significantly altered the trajectory of the race.

It is this backdrop that has earned him the reputation of a “Trojan horse” in Siaya politics—a strategic player whose entry into the race could dramatically reshape the contest. His current posture, therefore, is being interpreted less as indecision and more as calculated restraint.

Within both the broad-based government arrangement and the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), Wandayi is regarded as one of the most senior political figures from Siaya, alongside Oburu Oginga. This stature places him at the heart of ongoing succession conversations, whether or not he ultimately chooses to run.

For now, the facts remain clear: there is no formal declaration from Wandayi regarding a gubernatorial bid. His message, reinforced by his secretariat, centers on consultation, consensus, and ensuring capable leadership for Siaya.

The verdict is unequivocal—claims that he has announced his candidacy are false. Yet in a political environment where timing is everything, Wandayi’s silence may prove just as consequential as any declaration.
