ADVERTA routine trip to collect firewood turned into a devastating tragedy after an 11-year-old Grade Four pupil was electrocuted by a live power line in Pap-Kakan Village, Siaya Sub-County.
The boy, a pupil at Pap-Kakan Junior School, was collecting firewood with his siblings when an electricity pole reportedly broke, sending a live wire crashing onto him.
The incident, which occurred on July 12, 2026, happened in a bush about 50 metres from the family home. The child died at the scene.
Police and Kenya Power personnel who arrived at the scene found the boy’s body lying on the ground and immediately secured the area as investigations commenced.
Crime Scene Investigation officers subsequently processed and documented the scene before the body was moved to Siaya County Referral Hospital mortuary, where it is being preserved pending a postmortem examination.
ADVERTThe tragedy has triggered investigations by police and Kenya Power officials, who are expected to establish what caused the electricity pole to collapse and whether any warning signs or infrastructure defects had been reported before the fatal incident.
The death has also renewed concerns about the safety of electricity infrastructure in rural communities, where fallen or damaged power lines can pose an immediate and potentially fatal danger to residents.
For the grieving family, however, the investigation comes after an unbearable loss: a young pupil who had simply ventured into the nearby bush with his siblings to gather firewood never returned home.
The Siaya incident comes amid another electrocution tragedy in neighbouring Kakamega County. On August 12, a 15-year-old Grade Nine learner died after reportedly coming into contact with electricity while disconnecting an electric coil heater at her home in Navakholo.
The Pap-Kakan death is a grim reminder of the dangers posed by fallen electricity infrastructure. Residents should treat every fallen or damaged power line as live and potentially lethal, keeping people and livestock away while immediately alerting the electricity provider or emergency authorities.
As investigations continue, the central question remains whether the fatal collapse was an unforeseeable accident or a warning sign of an infrastructure problem that could have been detected earlier.
For Siaya, the death of the young pupil is more than another electrocution statistic. It is a painful reminder that expanding access to electricity must go hand in hand with reliable maintenance, rapid response to faults and uncompromising public safety.
