Engineer Nicolas Gumbo attended the 40th anniversary celebration of Karariw Sports, hosted by the Karariw Self Help Group at Karariw Comprehensive School in Masogo A Village, Nyandiwa Sub location, Central Gem Ward, Gem Constituency, and his presence there underscored the deep connection between leadership, community and the unifying power of sport. The gathering was more than a ceremonial milestone. It was an example of how local initiative and grassroots organisation can create spaces for young people to express themselves, for neighbours to reconnect and for a shared sense of purpose to be strengthened. In a society where economic pressures and political contestation can affect community relations, coming together to celebrate a long standing community institution offers an important reminder that continuity, cooperation and collective effort remain central to the wellbeing of communities.

Karariw Sports, nurtured by the Karariw Self Help Group, has provided a platform for athletic development while also serving as a space for social interaction and community engagement. Through sports, young people are able to develop important values such as teamwork, discipline, commitment and responsibility. These values extend beyond the sporting field and can contribute to the development of responsible citizens who understand the importance of cooperation and respect for others. The continued existence of such initiatives demonstrates that community institutions can play an important role in shaping the social and personal development of young people when they receive sustained support from residents, leaders and other stakeholders.

The anniversary celebration also demonstrated the importance of recognising institutions that have remained relevant to their communities over time. The continuation of Karariw Sports reflects the commitment of community members who have invested their time, energy and resources in maintaining an initiative that serves successive generations. Such commitment deserves recognition because community development is not achieved only through major government programmes. It also depends on local people organising themselves around shared priorities and taking responsibility for initiatives that improve the lives of those around them.

The fundraising and resource mobilisation activities during the anniversary further highlighted the importance of community ownership in development. Local organisations require resources, skills and partnerships to sustain their activities and respond effectively to the needs of their members. Fundraising provides communities with an opportunity to contribute directly to projects that they understand and value. At the same time, public leaders, private actors and development partners have a responsibility to support such efforts in ways that strengthen local capacity and promote transparency and accountability.

The sporting activities provided another important dimension to the celebration. The match between Sirembe FC from North Gem Ward and Uriri FC from West Gem Ward brought together players, supporters and community members in an environment centred on healthy competition and interaction. Sirembe FC emerged victorious with a narrow win, but the importance of the event extended beyond the final result. The tournament demonstrated how sport can bring people together, encourage young people to use their talents constructively and create opportunities for communities from different areas to interact.

Sports development should therefore be considered an important component of community development. Young people need spaces where they can participate, develop their abilities and build relationships with others. Properly supported sporting activities can encourage discipline, teamwork and constructive use of time. They can also provide opportunities for talented young people who may otherwise lack access to organised sporting programmes. Supporting grassroots sports is therefore not simply about supporting football or other games. It is about investing in young people and strengthening the social structures within which they live.

The role played by the Karariw Self Help Group is particularly important because it demonstrates the capacity of community organisations to identify priorities and mobilise people around common objectives. Self help groups remain important institutions within many communities because they provide structures through which residents can organise themselves, contribute resources and pursue projects that respond to local needs. Their effectiveness depends on committed leadership, participation by members and meaningful partnerships with other stakeholders.

Such groups should receive greater attention from policymakers and community leaders. Supporting them does not necessarily mean taking over their responsibilities. Rather, it means creating an environment in which they can operate effectively. Access to capacity building, technical assistance, appropriate funding and partnerships with government institutions can strengthen their ability to implement projects and serve their communities. Public institutions should therefore recognise grassroots organisations as development partners rather than viewing them only as beneficiaries of public programmes.

Engineer Nicolas Gumbo’s presence at the anniversary celebration also provides an opportunity to reflect on the responsibilities of leaders and those seeking public office. As an aspirant for the Siaya County governor’s seat, his participation in a grassroots community event demonstrates the importance of remaining connected to ordinary residents and understanding the issues that matter to them. Leadership should not be limited to formal political meetings or major public occasions. It should also involve engagement with community groups, youth organisations, sports associations, women groups and other institutions that form the foundation of local society.

For political leaders and aspirants, grassroots engagement should be approached with sincerity and consistency. Communities need leaders who listen to their concerns, recognise their efforts and support practical initiatives that can improve local conditions. Political engagement should therefore create opportunities for dialogue and partnership rather than simply becoming an avenue for seeking political support. When leaders participate meaningfully in community activities, they gain a better understanding of local priorities while communities gain an opportunity to communicate their aspirations directly.

The Karariw celebration also raises broader questions about the kind of development that Siaya County should pursue. Development cannot be measured only through physical infrastructure or economic programmes. Strong communities also require social institutions that promote interaction, cooperation and participation. Sports grounds, community groups, schools and other public spaces provide important environments where people can meet, organise and work together. Strengthening these institutions should therefore form part of a broader approach to county development.

The relationship between sports and youth empowerment deserves particular attention. Many young people possess talent but lack adequate opportunities to develop it. Grassroots sporting programmes can help create pathways through which young people discover their abilities and gain confidence. They can also provide opportunities for mentorship and leadership development. County governments and other stakeholders should therefore explore ways of strengthening sporting infrastructure, supporting local competitions and providing training opportunities for coaches, administrators and young athletes.

Community fundraising also offers an important lesson about shared responsibility. Government has a major responsibility to provide public services and development infrastructure, but communities also have a role to play in identifying their priorities and contributing to local initiatives. The most effective partnerships are those where communities retain ownership of their projects while public institutions and other partners provide appropriate support. Such cooperation can create stronger institutions and encourage residents to participate actively in local development.

The 40th anniversary of Karariw Sports therefore represents more than the celebration of a sporting tradition. It reflects the value of continuity, community participation and local leadership. The fact that residents continue to organise around an initiative that has served their community for many years demonstrates the importance of institutions that are rooted in local ownership. Their preservation and strengthening can help ensure that future generations inherit functional community structures rather than having to create everything from the beginning.

There is also a lesson in the manner in which the anniversary combined celebration with development. Community occasions can be used to strengthen relationships while also addressing practical needs. When people gather around a shared activity, they create opportunities to discuss challenges, mobilise resources and identify areas where cooperation is needed. This approach encourages communities to view their social activities as part of a wider development process.

For Siaya County, there is a need for a leadership approach that recognises the importance of such grassroots institutions. County leadership should listen to communities and develop programmes that respond to their priorities. Support for sports, youth groups, self help organisations and community initiatives should be integrated into wider development planning. This would help ensure that development reaches communities in ways that reflect their actual needs and aspirations.

Engineer Nicolas Gumbo’s engagement with the Karariw community offers an important reminder that leadership is closely connected to presence, listening and partnership. Those seeking to lead the county should understand that communities are not passive recipients of development. They are active participants with ideas, institutions and capabilities that can contribute significantly to the progress of the county. Effective leadership should therefore create room for these local efforts to grow while ensuring that public resources and opportunities are distributed fairly and responsibly.

The Karariw Sports anniversary ultimately provides a broader reflection on the importance of community driven development. The celebration brought together sport, community organisation, fundraising and leadership in a single setting. It demonstrated that when residents organise themselves around shared interests, they can create institutions that remain relevant across generations. It also showed that leaders and other stakeholders can strengthen these initiatives by recognising their importance and providing meaningful support.

As Siaya County continues to consider its development priorities and future leadership, the experience of Karariw should encourage greater attention to grassroots initiatives. Communities need leaders who understand that development begins with people and that strong institutions are built through sustained engagement. Supporting sports, community groups and local development initiatives can help create communities where young people have opportunities, residents participate in local affairs and collective responsibility is valued.

Celebrating 40 years of Karariw Sports was therefore an opportunity to recognise the people who have sustained the initiative and to consider what more can be done to strengthen such institutions. The occasion affirmed the importance of sports as a means of promoting unity, youth development and community participation. It also demonstrated the value of leadership that remains connected to grassroots communities. As Engineer Nicolas Gumbo continues his engagement with residents across Siaya County as an aspirant for the county governor’s seat, such interactions can contribute to a wider conversation about the kind of leadership and development the people of Siaya deserve. The future of strong communities depends on sustained participation, responsible leadership and a willingness to support initiatives that place people at the centre of development.
