The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Wednesday night issued a red alert requesting Kasipul politician Phillip Nahashon Aroko to surrender to the nearest police station as a person of interest in the ongoing investigation on the murder of MP Ong’ondo Were.
The red alert came as a big surprise only hours following the arrest of the main suspect in the April 30 murder of the legislator.
Edwin Oduor Odhiambo alias Abdul Rashid was arrested at a Nairobi residential area and a duffel bag containing several items recovered, including two pistols and rounds of ammunition believed to have been with the suspect during the shooting. Also recovered was KES 620,000 in hard cash and canvas shoes identical to what the shooter was wearing as revealed on CCTV footage.
The arrest of Abdul Rashid and another, brought to six the number of suspects in the murder probe. Kenyans were almost finding closure on the matter when the DCI dropped a bombshell with the red alert on Phillip Nahashon Aroko.
The flamboyant, youthful politician with a crop of prematurely greying hair and a well-trimmed beard has been tied in to the Nairobi wash-wash gangs who trade in fake currency and fake gold.
A source close to the investigations has revealed that the police have traced the owner of a Toyota Mark Grande saloon which dropped the shooter at Parliament buildings leading to the red alert.
A TV47 documentary has also picked out the shooter and traced his movements as he trailed the MP’s Toyota Crown along several Nairobi streets before pouncing on him at Ngong Road.
On reaching near the spot where the shooting occured, it appeared, only one vehicle stood between Were’s Toyota Crown and the motorcycle.
The vehicle proceeded to the City Mortuary Roundabout and stopped at the indication of the red light as a police officer manned the traffic on the other end.
It was at that moment at the traffic light that the suspect dismounted and charged toward Were’s car, where he fired several shots, shattering the car window before getting to the lawmaker.
He thereafter quickly boarded the motorbike and took off, headed towards the city centre.
Another footage would later show the suspect boarding the Toyota Mark Grande that he had earlier on dropped him off outside parliament.
It is not yet clear whether Nahashon Aroko has deliberately gone into hiding or is unaware of the notice on his head.
Links tying one of the suspects to the police service is also yet-to-be-proven.
