The government is set to employ an additional 24,000 teachers this year.
This recruitment brings to 100,000 the number of teachers hired in the last 2 years.
While addressing parents, teachers and students in Baringo today, Basic Education Principal Secretary Julius Bitok said the move aims at curbing the teacher/learner ratio in public schools.
Bitok was speaking at Baringo High School where he presided over the school’s 60th anniversary.
Bitok said that so far 76,000 teachers have been employed to meet the demands of the Curriculum-based Education system both at junior and secondary levels.
“The target of 116,000 in five years promised by the Ruto administration is practically achievable,” said the PS, adding “We intend to recruit a further 16,000 teachers next year.”
Meanwhile, the Teacher Service Commission (TSC) has removed 1,864 teachers from its initial April promotion list, replacing them with newly interviewed candidates.
TSC CEO Nancy Macharia said they had been forced to relax the Career Progression Guidelines (CPG) that require a minimum of three years of service in a given grade before promotion since they had a severe shortfall in eligible candidates, particularly for positions of principal and deputy headteacher.
She revealed that in selecting replacements, the commission prioritized educators who had served in one grade for at least seven years and were within three years of retirement.
Subsequently, 25,252 teachers were promoted in May, 2025.
