No Regrets — Sifuna Says of 8 Years Tenure as ODM Party Secretary-general

Nairobi Senator and Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Secretary General Edwin Sifuna has said he would not be upset if the party decided to replace him as SG.

Speaking during an interview on Tuesday, July 22, Sifuna reflected on his tenure at the helm of the party, making it clear that he is at peace with any decision the party may make about his position.

“It has been the honour of my life to be the Secretary General of ODM. There is no political platform that is bigger than ODM and the Secretary General of ODM; I have been the Secretary General of ODM for 8 years, the longest serving.

“There are contributions that I made to the party that I will not feel bad if they gave an opportunity to someone else,” he said.

Sifuna was responding to questions touching on his known hard stance against the Ruto administration.

Sifuna also responded to President William Ruto’s threat to convene a meeting of ODM founding members to discipline him.

He dismissed the president’s claim to authority within ODM and rejected the notion that Ruto had any legitimate say in the party’s internal affairs.

“Nobody should threaten me with founder member status. There is no organ of ODM called ‘founders’, and President William Ruto is not a member of the party. Only the disciplinary committee can discipline me, not William Ruto,” he added.

Speaking during the burial of Raila Odinga’s bodyguard George Oduor’s funeral on Saturday, April 12, Ruto issued a warning to Sifuna, invoking his role as a founding member of the ODM.

Ruto reminded Sifuna of his deep-rooted ties to ODM and implied that continued provocation could lead to disciplinary action from the party’s original leadership.

“When you speak about me, Edwin Sifuna, know that I am a founding member of ODM. If you push me too far, I will call for a meeting of the founding members, and if we do, we can discipline you,” said the president.

During the interview the maverick Nairobi Senator was singularly grateful to Raila Amollo Odinga and the countrywide ODM Party fraternity for the trust bestowed upon him.

He, nonetheless, vowed to continue to fight for constitutionality and the rule of law even if it’s at the risk of losing his life.
