Following the final inspection on Friday by the Kisumu Chief Magistrate Hon. Dickson Onyango the new Kisumu City Court will now be operational starting Monday 4 August, 2025.
The court has been set up to handle minor infractions and bylaw breaches including parking, hawking and land rates disputes.
It will specifically reduce a backlog of petty cases brought before the High Court and help resolve lower‑value, local cases at a local court.
The court will integrate digital access through the e‑filing system and shared service center. It will also support broader justice reforms through AJS, Small Claims Court, and SGBV specialization.
The Kisumu City Court forms a crucial part of county-level justice reforms introduced in 2025. Apart from decongesting the High Court, it handles city‑level infractions and disputes, offers digital filing and quick processing, and complements community‑based and specialized courts mainly AJS, Small Claims, and SGBV courts.
During the final inspection the Chief Magistrate was accompanied by City Inspectorate Head Mr. Brooks Ochieng and ICT Head Mr. Ayim O.B.A.
The Chief Magistrate complimented the county administration under Prof. Peter Anyang’ Nyong’o for setting up the facility that will improve access to justice for the residents of Kisumu.
“The facility marks a key step in improving access to justice with the Judiciary and City Management set to collaborate for smooth operations,” said Hon. Dickson Onyango.
