Ukwala, Ugenya Sub-County — Siaya Governor James Aggrey Orengo on Friday presided over the groundbreaking ceremony for a new two-storey hospital complex at Ukwala, a project hailed as a major boost to healthcare delivery in the region.
The state-of-the-art annex, set to elevate Ukwala Sub-County Hospital to a Level Four facility, will feature modern healthcare infrastructure, including an ultra-modern operating theatre, radiology and X-ray units, a high-tech laboratory, and a fully equipped accident and emergency wing.
The facility’s design also incorporates wide corridors, a translucent-roofed dual stairway ramp, 24-hour casualty and nurse stations, a plaster room, linen store, cashier office, physiotherapy wing, ultrasound and biomedical rooms, as well as specialized blood transfusion and chemistry units.
Parking space has been expanded to ease movement, while a standby high-capacity generator will guarantee uninterrupted services. An ambulance will also be dedicated to the annex to strengthen emergency response.

According to Ugenya Sub-County Medical Superintendent, Dr. Belinda Akinyi, the new maternity wing, with a capacity of over 50 beds, will be a “game-changer” for expectant mothers. “This project addresses the growing demand for maternal and child healthcare in Ugenya and will ease pressure on existing facilities,” she said.
Governor Orengo affirmed that the county would deploy adequate doctors and health professionals to the hospital upon completion, noting that Ugenya’s population of 134,000 required reliable and accessible services.
Local leaders welcomed the development. Ugenya MCA Joseph Oduor commended the governor for prioritizing health and education, saying, “The Governor’s commitment to modern ECD and robust healthcare shows that service delivery is on track. Come 2027, his record will speak for itself.”
Residents also urged the county to bring assessment services closer to Ukwala. In response, Governor Orengo pledged continued investment in health and infrastructure, announcing upcoming upgrades for Aboke and Sifuyo hospitals, as well as new ring roads in the county.
Brushing off critics, Orengo declared, “Negative energy from distractors will not deter us. The future of Ugenya and Siaya at large is bright.” He further revealed plans for another groundbreaking in Siaya town on September 8, linked to new economic stimulus projects.

The new Ukwala hospital annex is expected to significantly reduce preventable deaths caused by lack of access to timely medical services, while reinforcing the governor’s health and infrastructure blueprint for Siaya County.
