Lessons from the Kibagendi–Nyakundi Fight and the Ruto-Raila Influence on Regional Politics
Spread the love

The funeral of Salome Ongwae in Sensi Ward, Kisii County, was meant to be a solemn affair. Instead, it became a theatre of political chaos when Kitutu Chache South MP Anthony Kibagendi and his Kitutu Chache North counterpart Japheth Nyakundi turned the dais into a boxing ring.

While the two were fighting a delegation of Gusii leaders was being hosted at State House Nairobi with both Ruto and Raila present

Before mourners’ stunned eyes, the two legislators—once brothers in youthful politics—physically fought after sharp verbal jabs over national politics. Kibagendi, an ardent defender of former Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, accused President William Ruto of being “a liar who hoodwinked the nation.” Nyakundi, a Ruto ally, yanked the microphone, sparking a melee that saw police and bodyguards scramble to restrain elected leaders in front of cameras and mourners alike.

The images went viral, but behind the spectacle lies a deeper lesson: Gusii politics is standing at a dangerous crossroads, torn between loyalty to powerful individuals, shifting national alliances, and a restless electorate demanding genuine representation.

The Gusii Fault Line: Matiang’i vs. the System

For years, Fred Matiang’i was the face of Gusii power in Nairobi—firm, feared, and fiercely loyal to former President Uhuru Kenyatta. His word carried weight in Kisii and Nyamira. But the Ruto–Raila handshake of convenience has upended that dominance.

In a rare twist, President Ruto and his long-time rival Raila Odinga are reading from the same script in Gusii: dismantle Matiang’i’s stranglehold by propping up “home-grown” leaders who speak the people’s language. The Kibagendi–Nyakundi fight was not just about egos; it was a public manifestation of this realignment.

Insiders say both State House and Raila’s camp are quietly encouraging Gusii MPs to distance themselves from Matiang’i, portraying him as a relic of “security politics” that marginalized grassroots voices. The script is simple: fracture Matiang’i’s inner circle and offer Gusii a new face of power.

What the Fight Revealed

1. Gusii politics is hyper-fragmented – The altercation showed that the community is no longer bound by a single political kingpin. Every MP, senator, and MCA is carving their own path. The unity that once made Gusii a bargaining bloc is cracking.

2. The people are impatient – Locals watching the scuffle murmured about “shame” and “betrayal.” To many, leaders are more interested in trading insults than delivering development. Ordinary residents in Kisii markets now ask: If leaders can’t control their tempers at a funeral, can they control the destiny of the people?

3. National alliances are reshaping local loyalties – The Raila–Ruto convergence against Matiang’i is forcing Gusii leaders to choose sides quickly. Fence-sitting is no longer an option, and public confrontations—like Kibagendi and Nyakundi’s—will only grow sharper as 2027 approaches.

4. Power is no longer guaranteed by titles – Matiang’i’s reputation for no-nonsense leadership once secured near-blind loyalty. Now, voters are questioning whether such tough styles translate into jobs, roads, and economic growth. The lesson is clear: charisma without tangible development is a fading currency.

The National Lesson

What happened in Sensi is not just a Gusii story—it is a Kenyan story. Across the country, funerals have become political rallies, and rival factions often hijack grief to push their agendas. But the Kibagendi–Nyakundi fight was more than theatre. It exposed the fragility of political alliances and the dangers of personality cults that reduce national politics to brawls.

If two MPs can openly fight in front of their electorate, it signals that civility in politics is eroding. It also shows how volatile the Ruto–Raila alliance could become if transplanted nationally: strong personalities clashing over turf and influence, while ordinary citizens wait for roads, hospitals, and jobs.

The Gusii region now faces a defining moment. Will it cling to old loyalties around a single powerful son, or will it embrace a plural, competitive leadership model? Will its leaders channel their energy into service delivery, or keep embarrassing their constituents with public scuffles?

As one elderly mourner whispered after the fight: “We need leaders who build roads, not ones who fight over microphones.”

The lesson is as clear as it is painful: politics built on personalities, not principles, will always end in chaos. And the Gusii fight might just be the warning shot Kenya needed before 2027.
