In today’s digital age, where a tweet or WhatsApp broadcast can circle the globe in seconds, the battle for truth has become a battlefield. Two terms — Misinformation and Disinformation — are often used interchangeably, but understanding the difference between them is critical to staying informed, protecting public health, and safeguarding democracy.
What’s the difference?
At its simplest: intent matters. Misinformation is false or inaccurate information that is shared without the intent to deceive. Disinformation is false information spread deliberately to mislead.
Misinformation: “Most people think it’s true and share it, but it’s wrong anyway.”
Disinformation: “Someone knows it’s false — they create or propagate it on purpose.”
For example, when an individual reposts a false health tip believing it to be beneficial, that’s misinformation. But when a group fabricates a sensational health claim to drive website clicks, instability, or profit, that’s disinformation.
Why does this distinction matter?
Because the solutions differ. If something is misinformation, then correcting the error, spreading accurate facts, and fostering awareness are key. But if something is disinformation, the threat is more systemic: manipulation, influence campaigns, propaganda, sometimes even aimed at disrupting institutions. The term disinformation itself has roots in Russian propaganda — the word “dezinformácija”.
In addition, the field of media literacy — the ability to access, analyse, evaluate, create and act using media responsibly — emphasises that we must recognise not only what information we receive, but why and how it is delivered.
The mechanics of the spread
Digital platforms have dramatically accelerated how both kinds of content spread. Bots, trolls, manipulated images and videos, viral posts — all these tools contribute.

Consequences for society
Although both carry risk, disinformation tends to be more harmful because of its intent. It can erode trust in institutions, skew public debate, hamper health responses, and lead to real-world damage. The challenge is especially pressing in contexts where access to reliable information is already uneven.

4. Slow down the share: Pause before forwarding or reposting something sensational. If you’re not sure, don’t share. That simple act helps reduce the spread of both kinds of falsehood.
5. Build your media-literacy muscles: It’s a lifelong process. Platforms change, strategies evolve — being critical and aware is your defence.
We live in a time where “false” information comes in many flavours. Knowing whether you’re dealing with a mistake or a manipulative act is more than semantics — it shapes how you respond, and how society responds. By distinguishing between misinformation and disinformation, and by equipping ourselves with fact-checking and media-literacy habits, we don’t just guard our own minds — we protect the public discourse, our communities and the trust that underpins them.
