In a move that signals a potential thawing of political tensions, Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has confirmed that former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is planning a visit to Bondo to offer condolences to Mama Ida Odinga following the passing of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
Speaking on Thursday, November 6th, Musyoka revealed that he had spoken with Gachagua and that arrangements are being made for the former Deputy President to pay his respects at the family home. This confirmation comes despite earlier reservations expressed by some members of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).
“Rigathi Gachagua will look for time and come to mourn our late brother Raila,” Musyoka stated. “I spoke to Gachagua last night, and of course, as the United Opposition, we are now strategizing on the upcoming by-elections, so some of them are very busy.”
Musyoka’s statement followed his own visit to Raila’s gravesite at Kang’o Ka Jaramogi, where he paid his respects and condoled with Mama Ida. Kalonzo brought with him 100 head of cattle as a sign of respect for the departed friend and compatriot Raila Amollo Odinga. This act of solidarity, alongside the planned visit by Gachagua, underscores the significance of the moment and the desire for unity during a period of national mourning.
The news of Gachagua’s planned visit follows a period of heightened sensitivity surrounding the former Deputy President’s public pronouncements and his relationship with the Odinga family and their supporters. Weeks ago, ODM leaders, including Kisumu Vice Chairperson Seth Kanga, had cautioned Gachagua against visiting Bondo, citing past remarks deemed unfriendly to the party.
However, Raila Odinga Jr. countered those concerns, asserting that all Kenyans are welcome to pay their respects at Kang’o Ka Jaramogi, regardless of political affiliation. His statement reflects a desire to create a welcoming environment for mourners and foster unity during a challenging time.
The visit by Gachagua, if it proceeds as planned, would mark a significant moment of reconciliation. It comes on the heels of visits by other prominent figures, including Martha Karua, who led a delegation of women leaders to the Odinga family home at Opoda Farm. Karua, in a statement released earlier in the week, reflected on her long friendship with Raila and Ida, highlighting their shared commitment to democracy and justice.
The unfolding events in Bondo serve as a poignant reminder of the power of shared grief to transcend political divides and the enduring importance of national unity. As the nation mourns the loss of a prominent leader, the planned visit by Gachagua and the welcoming stance of the Odinga family offer a glimmer of hope for a more unified future.
