The County Government of Siaya has completed yet another milestone in its aggressive healthcare outreach after wrapping up a highly successful three-day free eye camp at Yala Sub-County Hospital, restoring hope and sight to hundreds of residents.
The medical marathon, conducted through the Department of Health and Sanitation in partnership with the Fred Hollows Foundation, offered a full package of services — from eye testing and screening to consultations, treatment, and sight-restoring surgeries.
A specialised team of ophthalmologists, nurses, and support personnel pitched camp at Yala, providing uninterrupted care to long queues of patients, many of whom had silently battled avoidable eye conditions for years.
Common diagnoses included cataracts, glaucoma, refractive errors, and pterygium, with patients requiring surgery receiving it immediately. Others walked home with medication, reading glasses, or scheduled follow-up appointments.
Lead ophthalmologist Dr. Calvin Omondi described the findings as eye-opening — literally.
“Most of the conditions we detected are preventable causes of blindness. Bringing services closer to the community helps us reduce avoidable vision loss and ensure early intervention,” he said.
Riding on the overwhelming success in Yala, the Department of Health and Sanitation has announced the next free eye camp will be held at Siaya County Referral Hospital from the 11th to the 13th, giving residents another golden opportunity to access free eye screening and life-changing surgical services.
The upcoming camp is expected to attract an even larger turnout as awareness grows and more residents seek early diagnosis and treatment.
Siaya County continues to step up its investments in medical outreach, with health authorities emphasizing that such camps are vital in supporting vulnerable populations — especially the elderly, people in remote villages, and those unable to afford specialized eye care.
The county government says these programs align with its broader healthcare agenda: bringing affordable, accessible, and quality medical services directly to the people.
With more eye camps lined up and partnerships expanding, Siaya is steadily positioning itself as a regional model in community-driven health interventions — ensuring that no resident loses their sight to preventable conditions.
