The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has lauded President William Samoei Ruto’s bold decision to rename Talanta Stadium in honour of the late former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga, calling it “a monumental step toward national healing and unity.”
The announcement was made during the 2025 Jamhuri Day celebrations, where President Ruto declared that the facility will now be known as Raila Amolo Odinga Stadium, immortalising the legacy of one of Kenya’s most influential statesmen.
In a statement signed by ODM National Chairperson H.E. Gladys Wanga, the party warmly welcomed the move, noting it followed a heartfelt appeal they made during Raila Odinga’s burial ceremony in Bondo. ODM had urged the country to find a befitting, lasting way to honour a man whose contribution to justice, democracy, and national unity remains unparalleled.
ODM praised the President for “acting in the spirit of patriotism and cohesion,” emphasizing that naming the stadium after Raila is more than symbolic—it’s a national recognition of his lifelong sacrifice to expand Kenya’s democratic space and safeguard constitutionalism.
Terming the gesture a “deep honour,” ODM framed it as an important step in promoting mutual respect and healing in a politically divided nation.
“We view it as a national step towards healing, unity, and mutual respect—values that the late Rt. Hon. Odinga lived and fought for throughout his life,” the statement read.
