Fresh details have emerged in the investigation into the death of former Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo, shedding new light on the final moments before the fatal road crash that claimed his life along the busy Nakuru–Nairobi highway.
Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) say newly obtained CCTV footage has pieced together Jirongo’s last movements on the night of December 13, 2025, moments before the deadly collision in the Karai area near Eagol Petrol Station.
According to investigators, the footage captures a public service bus operated by Climax Company Ltd veering into Jirongo’s vehicle in a violent head-on crash, setting off a chain of events that would later prove fatal.
The impact, detectives say, was severe enough to drag Jirongo’s car along the highway, a detail corroborated by witnesses at the scene.
The probe has also turned the spotlight on a white Toyota Probox seen in the CCTV recording near the petrol station shortly before the crash. The vehicle was traced to Keringet Ward MCA and Nakuru County Assembly Majority Leader William Mutai. DCI records show that on December 11, 2025, the car had been hired out by Mutai’s wife to Denis Kipyegon Koech.

Koech told investigators that he had used the Probox to ferry relatives to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport to welcome a family member returning from New Mexico University in the United States. On their return journey, the family stopped at Eagol Petrol Station just after midnight to refuel.
It was there, they say, that they saw Jirongo leave the station in his vehicle moments before a loud bang shattered the night. In statements recorded by detectives, the family said they rushed toward the sound and witnessed a bus dragging a wrecked car along the road.
A security guard at the petrol station reportedly asked them to assist by positioning their vehicle to illuminate the crash scene with headlights as emergency efforts unfolded. However, as traffic began to pile up along the highway, the family left the area. They only learned later, upon reaching home, that the victim was the former Lugari legislator.
In a statement, the DCI cautioned that all witness accounts and claims are still being scrutinised as part of what it described as a “thorough and impartial” investigation.
“The DCI is interrogating the veracity of the claims and reassures the family, friends, and the people of Kenya that comprehensive investigations into this incident are ongoing,” the agency said, adding that further updates will be issued as inquiries continue.
Jirongo’s death has sparked national attention, with Kenyans keenly awaiting clarity on the circumstances surrounding the tragic crash that ended the life of one of the country’s most recognisable political figures.
