2 Police Officers Killed, 5 Injured in Deadly IED Blast Near Somalia Border

Two police officers have been killed and five others injured after their Border Patrol Unit vehicle was hit by an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) along the volatile Liboi–Kulan road in Garissa County.

The Wednesday, November 19 attack—believed to have been carried out by Al-Shabaab militants—targeted a routine patrol team operating near the Kenya–Somalia frontier, a region long troubled by extremist infiltration and cross-border incursions.

Authorities report that the officers were travelling in a Land Cruiser when the explosive, planted strategically on the roadside, detonated with devastating force. One officer died on the spot, while a second succumbed to injuries shortly afterward. Five others were rushed to medical facilities for treatment.

Security agencies have since launched a major operation across the border corridor to track down the attackers and reinforce surveillance in one of Kenya’s most high-risk security zones.

The Liboi–Kulan stretch—characterised by rugged terrain and porous borders—has recorded multiple IED attacks in recent years, underscoring the evolving threat posed by militant groups operating from Somalia.

This latest incident mirrors another deadly IED blast in July in Ijara, Garissa County, where two residents—Mohamed Shabel Bashir and Abdikadir Muhumed Salat—lost their lives in Bodhai, Madah Adon.

Ijara MP Abdi Ali Abdi condemned that attack as a “senseless act of violence” and warned that the persistent threat of extremist activity continues to endanger border communities.

“This tragic incident is a painful reminder of the dangers facing our people,” the MP said, urging national security agencies to intensify operations and bring perpetrators to justice.

With back-to-back attacks heightening anxiety in the region, multi-agency teams are now conducting aggressive patrols, surveillance sweeps, and targeted operations to suppress militant movement along the border.

Authorities are calling for vigilance from local communities and pledging a reinforced security presence as Kenya confronts renewed threats from extremist networks.
