A coordinated security operation targeting organized criminal networks in Kisumu has led to the arrest of two suspects, as detectives intensify efforts to dismantle gang activity in the lakeside city.
The intelligence-led operation, spearheaded by officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters in collaboration with local units, resulted in the apprehension of Gabriel Oyuga Nyaoke, also known as Omar. He was intercepted at Guba Centre while reportedly en route to Kisumu Town.
Authorities say Nyaoke was found carrying a small black bag containing a tear gas canister and twenty rolls of cannabis, locally known as bhang—an indication, investigators believe, of his links to illicit trade and possible gang activity.
In a separate but related arrest, Collins Omondi, a resident of the Riat area, was taken into custody following a swift search of his vehicle. Detectives recovered multiple identification cards, a tear gas canister, a knife, holsters, and five rounds of 7.62×39 mm special ammunition—items that have raised serious security concerns among investigators.
Both suspects remain in custody and are undergoing processing ahead of their court appearance.
The latest arrests signal a renewed push by the DCI to curb rising cases of organized crime in Kisumu and its environs. Security agencies have increasingly turned to intelligence-driven operations to track and neutralise criminal networks, amid growing public concern over safety.
“The message is clear—criminal gangs have no place in our communities,” a source familiar with the operation noted, underscoring the agency’s resolve to bring offenders to justice.
Members of the public are encouraged to support law enforcement efforts by sharing information anonymously through the DCI hotline: 0800 722 203, or via WhatsApp at 0709 570 000.
As the crackdown gathers momentum, authorities remain vigilant, promising sustained operations aimed at restoring order and safeguarding residents across the region.
