Kenyan security forces have scored a major victory in the fight against terrorism, thwarting a sophisticated Al-Shabaab plot aimed at unleashing mass casualties in the capital during the holy month of Ramadan.
The operation, announced by Counter Terrorism Policing Kenya (CTP-Kenya), followed months of intensive surveillance and covert intelligence gathering targeting an extremist network embedded in the Dadaab refugee camps near the Somali border. Investigators tracked suspects’ movements, communications, and supply lines, leading to the seizure of a substantial cache of weapons and explosives destined for Nairobi.
Recovered items included 600 rounds of ammunition, pistols, grenades, explosives, and even drugs believed intended to support the attackers. Authorities revealed the militants had timed their assault for Ramadan and were actively exploring additional tactics, such as kidnapping foreigners and hijacking vehicles, to amplify chaos and international impact.
“Plans by the terrorist group Al-Shabaab to kill many Kenyans in Nairobi have once again been foiled by the intelligence agency,” CTP-Kenya stated, emphasizing the pre-emptive nature of the strike that prevented what could have been a devastating attack on civilians.
No casualties occurred during the operation, and while specific arrests were not detailed publicly, investigations continue with coordination among the National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC), the National Police Service, and other agencies. The plot underscores the persistent threat from Al-Shabaab, the Somalia-based Al-Qaeda affiliate responsible for past atrocities in Kenya, including the 2013 Westgate Mall siege, the 2015 Garissa University massacre, and the 2019 DusitD2 complex assault.
Kenyan security personnel—often working long, grueling hours in high-risk environments—have once more proven their dedication and skill. Their vigilance has ensured Nairobi remains safe, allowing residents and visitors to go about their daily lives without the shadow of imminent danger.
As Ramadan draws near, authorities are urging the public to stay alert and report any suspicious activity immediately through emergency lines like 999 or dedicated counter-terrorism channels.
