A tragic road accident claimed the life of a Bodaboda rider on Thursday evening, sending shockwaves through the bustling Siaya town area.
The incident occurred at approximately 5:30 PM along the Siaya–Lwanda road, just a few metres from Siaya CBD and near Bama Hospital. Witnesses reported that a heavily loaded sand lorry struck the motorbike rider, who died on the spot from the impact.
The unidentified rider was reportedly heading towards Karapul School from Siaya town when the collision happened. Traders and touts in the area, who were actively calling passengers for matatus bound for Lwanda and Kisumu, stood frozen in disbelief as the scene unfolded.
Emergency responders arrived quickly, but the rider could not be saved. His identity remained unconfirmed by press time, pending family notification and police investigations.
The accident highlights ongoing road safety concerns along this busy corridor, where heavy trucks sharing the road with vulnerable Bodaboda operators and pedestrians frequently lead to fatal crashes. Authorities are expected to investigate factors including possible speeding, overloading, or driver error.
Local leaders and traffic officials have repeatedly called for stricter enforcement of road rules and awareness campaigns to curb such preventable tragedies in Siaya County.
Motorists and riders are urged to exercise extra caution, especially during peak evening hours when traffic congestion peaks near urban centres.
